Did Sarah Palin Try to Ban Library Books?

Quote:
The librarian at the center of a 1996 controversy with then-Wasilla mayor Sarah Palin says she can't recall any effort by Palin to ban specific books from the town library.

About Sarah - I am an Alaskan; live in the Interior - my home! But I am previously from the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, which is Sarah's home too. I know Sarah and her husband, Todd, vicariously since Matanuska-Susitna Valley is relatively small.

I am not a republican and basically apolotical, but liberal. Anyhow, Sarah is CONSERVATIVE and very church oriented. Her 'home church' is in the Valley. Many (not all) in the Valley have deep and rather unique, perhaps contrived (?) religious values. There is a peculiar form of 'Alaskan' Christianity and Sarah is one.

About Sarah's banning of book: Yes, she did. Personally, I think this is shamefully wrong! In the Valley Sarah approached the library and TOLD the librarian certain books were against Sarah's church idealogy and therefore should be banned. This is their brand of conservative - SCARY.

In the Valley, here's the story (I was there so I can say): The librarian said, "No, this is a public library." (Yah for smart librarian)! !! Sarah then fired this librarian since at that time Sarah was the mayor in the Valley. Now she's running for VP.......disturbing.

Sarah has 5 children, which is fine, and their choice. But she is adament about Pro-Life and is a proponent for having multitudes of children (ie: her church doesn't advocate birth control). Sarah's unmarried 17 daughter is pregnant; likely this girl didn't use birth control (their church values) and cannot have an abortion - their choice. Sarah's daughter is now EXPECTED (this means instructed to) marry the baby's father. Ummm......good luck with that. This invariably will curtail Sarah's daughter's life. How can her daughter attend college? Have a fulfilling adult marriage, by choice? Have a career?

I'm not saying Sarah's daughter CAN'T do these things (listed above) but that she has complicated her life (pregnancy and not an adult) so that her chances of success are curtailed at least.

About current librarian 'not recalling' Sarah's actions: That's a different librarian. The one that said "No" was fired, then replaced.

Next, about Sarah's stance on those with disabilities (such as Autism/AS)......well, her record: Not an advocate for those with 'disabilities.' (Note: I am not implying we're 'disabled' but just speaking about technical term - please understand).

Sarah, as mayor, was very mainstream in her views on education and children; her emphasis. Special ed, which INCLUDES gifted programs (!) were not encouraged. Those with different learning styles just didn't have resources, only the mainstream 'average.'

Please know - Sarah just had a baby and he has Down's Syndrome. Some have speculated if this will change Sarah's views on those with special needs....unknown. Sarah has resources to care for her Down's baby so for her it's not really an issue. But what about those who do not have those advantages? A concern......

Because of Sarah's Christian belief, her own brand, she cannot support much current research, which complicates the matter too. She caters to 'normal.' Or whatever her version of 'normal' is.

Ok, one last thing (sorry!! !)

Sarah's church (Matanuska-Susitna Valley) is opening now stating that Sarah is the new biblical Esther. This means they believe she has been endowed by G_d the power to lead, just Esther in the Christian bible.

Somehow this seems a bit reckless to me. Sarah is Sarah, not the biblical Esther. Her church takes the bible very literally! And so does Sarah, who is very entrenched in her church beliefs. So, they (Sarah too) think G_d is 'guiding' Sarah to lead!

Sarah has a B.A. in journalism. She's smart, pretty, and likeable. But is she Esther? Led by G_d?

Disturbing, yes?

Yeah, and it seems she now might get that power.

No she did not ban any books.

She did not demand that books be banned from the Wasilla library. Some of the books on a widely circulated list were not even in print at the time. The librarian has said Palin asked a "What if?" question, but the librarian continued in her job through most of Palin's first term.

Gosh LabRat, from what you said about Sarah... the fact that McCain picked her to be VP dosn't say much for himself either. I just hope that they both remember that church and state are seperate.

If I was that librarian who was told to ban certain books because they go against her religious sensibilities, I would order more copies and display them in my window...This reminds of attempts in the 1980s to ban certain books from long Island schools. The yahoos and witch-burners are on the march again..

I read in a local newspaper that Palin did not actually order the librarian to ban certain books, but named some books and asked the librarian if she could (hypothetically) ban them, as an above poster stated. The article also said that Palin later said that it was meant to be a loyalty test, and she would not have actually banned the books (of course ) ... It still scares me though. She seems like one of those fundamentalist social conservatives that I despise.

She doesn't support any kind of special education? That's ridiculous... I haven't had to be in special education for learning disabilities, but I am in public school advanced classes, and the difference between regular and advanced classes is big. Regular classes, for the most part, progress very, very slowly and the classwork is inane. The students are also pretty annoying and intolerant, but that's another issue.
