Exit, stage right. ->
Peace.
the thing is those that aren't religious use logic and science to try and teach others what is infront of them and how to understand it further, religionists use concepts that are innacurate and try to put them in the path of 'god' without justifying it or giving a decent amount of proof.
if someone does a lot of drugs and dies religionists might say god killed him because drugs are evil, when a medical profesional would say the effects of the drug caused his heart to beat so fast he had a heart attack.
i understand and partly agree with what LKL has said so far, even the most offensive as it is true and proved to be true. if there is no proof it is just an asumption that could be false, and as there if no proof god exists we must aknowledge the fact god may not even exist.
seriously, to everyone on this forum who's religious, can't you believe just for a second that your 'god' is just apart of your mind? in your belief you could say god is a part of you whereas it's instead part of your subconcious, or even what you call your conscience.
something to think about.

This is just as bad as the religionist fundamental views when you add words such as delusional and I hate you religious types. I may not believe in god but I try to at least respect people's own beliefs without adding insult or assuming that I know better when all it is based upon a belief system.
Just like the pot calling the kettle black IMO.
No, it isn't. What you would be is agnostic. Atheism is not "the pot calling the kettle black", Hitler was wrong, and educating people about the real world is not "persecution". Grow up, really...
By the way, I've said it often enough, the religious are very literally delusional, and - again - I say the with *no* malice.
This is really a very simple concept! Why do you have trouble grasping it? My brother even understands... It's nothing difficult.

You may not hold positions that I personally find repugnant, but you still use an invisible, silent, immaterial sky-fairy to justify your beliefs - and you defend the general right of people to use sky-fairies to defend their beliefs.
You don't understand my faith at all. I do NOT and never would use faith to justify something that was morally wrong to me. My faith would not ask that of me. Hitler was a madman. The leaders in Somali who made the judgment that started this thread were mad men. These were not people truly guided by faith. They were guided by all too human failings within themselves.
And the God I believe in isn't a "sky fairy." Nor do I use Him to justify a thing. Faith challenges us to a better self, and a better world. If it does not, it is not true faith. I took and always will take huge issue with leaders who claim that God called them to war, and other negative acts.
As I said, you do NOT understand my faith at all. So don't judge it.
AND Ishmael's statement was very sweeping, about fools believing in a made up God. That wasn't a swipe just at religion, it was a swipe at the intelligence of anyone who claims to have faith. And that, most definitely, can be construed as personal.
Clearly you despise religion and the concept of faith. Because of the bad that has been done in it's name, you are ready to toss the baby out with the bath water. I can't deny the bad nor can I deny the abuse. But I am sorry that you have not seen the good in faith and religion, nor the potential truth in it. Not because I want to convert you, but because I'd like you to at least understand how I think and what I believe.
Okay, cut the crap out. I hate how you religious types abuse the word faith...
You are delusional, literally delusional. It's not an assumption, it's a fact.
Look up the dictionary term. Sorry, it's true.
There is no god, people like you trick yourselves into thinking there is, that's a delusion.
Do I care that some of you get offended by that? No. Why? Because it's not about personal views; it's about what is true. Nothing else.
There is no good in religion - the falsely assumed good aspects of religion are not exclusive to religion. Yes, I understand how and why you "believe". It doesn't make it less wasteful and foolish.
Your god is an incomparable waste. Must you live and die beneath the security blanket?
You should mind your own, instead. What can you say about your own life that is positive? What is so great about your own way of life? Ishmael, you're just about to cross the line of decency here. This is a support site, remember that.
WTF? Slowmutant, are you actually trying to use that lame "you don't believe in god, therefore you must be miserable" bit?
What, is the cold freezing your lil' old racist Canadian brain?
I will live without the wool covering my eyes. I am an increasingly wealthy and successful person, with the alarming new trait of making an enourmous and positive impact wherever I go.
You, however, seem to be content to bury your head in the sand, and make racist remarks about how I am of mixed descent.
Don't try pulling those lame attempts at arguments. Face it - your god is pathetic, ultimately inferior to myself or any like me. Accept the truth, because it's not going away.
Unlike religion, with it's - slowly - dwindling numbers.

so are you saying believing in god makes you a happier person? i guess you're right, if nothing was ever questioned people would still be in the dark ages, and with plague and religious war on every corner people back then must have been laughing every day
my life isn't perfect but it would be worse if i were religious, i blame myself when something goes wrong and so i change it, if i blamed god i'd let god sort things out... and then wait and wait and let the problem get worse because god won't do anything, neither will the tooth fairy or easter bunny.

Need I remind you that you are by your own admission of mixed descent?
You must have quite an inferiority complex if you insist that you're superior to God. That's just ridiculous.

Hey don't tell me what I don't grasp and quit attacking this is getting really silly just because I don't agree with how you're using your terminology.
There's something I learned in life and that's called tolerance. It's one thing to criticize faith but it's another to go around and insult people by directly calling them <fill in the blanks>. That to me is just as fundmental as a Christian would be if they were to tell me that I'm going to hell b/c I don't believe in god.
Get a grip Ishmael, this has turned into an arguement about what you personally want not at all what this topic is about. This thread has turned into nothing but I'm better than you because I Know the Truth. It's just as bad as putting on religion over another's religion. As if you knew the answeres to everything.
Why not put an X or star on people, that'll really help you know who's delusional or not and then you can just sit there and ascertain your asssumptions on them.

Okay... What, then, are you doing? Hypocrite...
Tolerence is only applicable to harmless but authentic differences. Would you "tolerate" an education program teaching kids the earth is flat and made of honey?
Of course it's "I know the truth"! I'm one of the ones with the bloody evidence! Truth is important! Not something to be "tolerated" aside! You tolerate a screaming kid; not outright primitive old world lies.
Slowmutant - I am of mixed descent. I can lightly call myself a "mongrel". The manner in which you used it is racist. The equivalent of running up to a black American, shouting "n****r" and running off. Don't do it.
And of course I'm superior to your god! Hardly a damned fool "inferiority complex"!
What can your god do? Create life? So can I. Listen? So can I.
But, I do more. I exist, and I have my own will. I'm not some hideous, genocidal, "loving" character from ancient fiction. I am very real - entirely unlike your god character.
Ready to come out from the security blankets?

WTH does the earth being flat have to do with calling people <fill in the blanks> honey?
Of course science is a fact. Belief is not a fact but I don't think that makes you any better to call people belonging to a particular group that you happen to dislike names.

NO ONE can prove there is NOT a God anymore than I can prove that there is. We are both applying logic different ways, but it is still logic. You say life is full of "accidents;" I say that I have evidence of too many "accidents" at just the right time to believe there isn't some logical force behind them.
My 11 year old AS son applies his own interpretation to faith, and I wish I could remember it accurately enough to post it. I think the essence is that he has concluded God is science and science is God. We are not, obviously, a family that takes the Bible literally. We have told our children that they are free to make their own decisions about faith and God, even though we are educating them in ours. My son loves logic and scientific method,. But even with that, one has to accept that there are things science can not and most likely will never be able to explain.
Those who misuse or misunderstand their own religion represent "faith" the same as I do. Neither is the whole, and neither can be discarded. The same as those who do not believe and those who do are all part of this thing called the human race. Pretty much everything on this earth is a mixed bag, and trying to make blanket assumptions about any group, or to ask which half represents the whole, is going to be inherently wrong from the beginning as a result. Each part deserves to be viewed on it's own, by it's own merits and faults.
We all have free will.
More than anything, I am upset by the arrogant and blanket statements in this thread. ANYONE who thinks in such sweeping terms is basically putting themselves on the same level as those they despise, because it is the lack of NUANCED thinking that is behind most that is unfair either under the guise of religion, or under the guise of science and logic. THIS is what I challenge, and I ask you to see. That way of viewing people and institutions will lead you down false paths.
I couldn't care a less if you believe exactly as I do, or understand my position, but I DO ask you to accept that perhaps there are valid positions out there that you do not have either the life experience, desire, or ability to see. Just because you can't see it, doesn't make it invalid. The blind man holding the tail of the elephant is every bit as accurate in his description of what an elephant must look like as is the blind man holding an ear. All of our ideas, all of our logic, is shaped and limited by what we have experienced, read, and known. Our life paths are different, and so our views are different. Neither is fully right; neither is fully wrong. It, in essence, "depends."
And with that, I think I should once again leave this thread.

Don't keep that crap going! Look, for the last time! *I'm* not "calling names"! ! It's a [literal fact]! ! PLEASE read up on what the term means!!
"faith-head" would be namecalling; bringing attention to a true state IS NOT!
DW_a_mom, there isn't anything beyond science. That defies the nature of science, and is a falliable argument.
Listen up, folks! Magic doesn't exist, and you can't bloody well expect me to play nice because people trick themselves into believing it!!
Dw_a_mom; what you say about accidents is an extremely common false assumption used as justification for religion; things are only "too coincidental" in *retrospect*! Think of the alternatives! There is an entire branch of physics entirely about that!!
Dammit it, people! You are lucky enough to experience a conscious, sentient reality! Why delude yourselves with dull and limited flights of fancy, when reality is far the more stunning and awesome; moreover, immediate and real!
There's no such thing as a god, any god. It CAN, I repeat, *CAN* be proven!
But even if it weren't; why waste your only life on a "maybe, maybe"?

Well this one debate that is going way off topic to this original subject. I agree with you but on the otherhand I think you're getting your facts mixed up with your personal views. These are your views about people of faith vs what is logic and what is belief. Belief is not the same thing as logic.
