Maybe it's a deep water creature? Reminds me of the show Animal Planet had one time about the giant squid off of Japan.

The wheel-spoke "elbows" that make the squid look like a baby's mobile helps it trail its tentacles separately to form a better net in an environment where there is no current. So it doesn't have to swim around much to cover as much water... or maybe it's for mating purposes?

Cool adaptation.

Looks like he/she has a pretty lethargic and uneventful lifestyle. I like how most of these really deep-sea animals who've adapted to wandering in the dark for the occasional morsel or mate will take on what we would think of as totally impractical bodies.

I actually thought it was a graceful looking squid, particularly with it's slowly flapping fins on the side.
