Teen charged with impersonating Chicago police
Police spokeswoman Monique Bond says the Chicago teen was charged Sunday after he entered a station in the city's South Side and claimed to be a police officer.
Bond says a sergeant later questioned the boy and discovered he wasn't an officer. She says the boy is a member of a program for youth interested in police work.
She also says the boy was not armed and was never behind the wheel of a police car.
Police are not identifying the boy because he is a juvenile.
The department's internal affairs division is investigating
What I wanna know is, how did a 14 year-old kid manage to buy a regulation police uniform? Are they that easy to get?
1. He stole it, or someone stole it for him.
2. He made it, or someone made it for him.
3. He bought it, or someone bought it for him.
4. He found it, or someone found it for him.

Hmmmm... The updated story is a bit different...
Boy, 14, dupes police, patrols Chicago for 5 hours
The boy did not have a gun, never issued any tickets and didn't drive the squad car, Deputy Superintendent Daniel Dugan said.
Assistant Superintendent James Jackson said the ruse was discovered only after the boy's patrol with an actual officer ended Saturday. Officers noticed his uniform lacked a star that is part of the regulation uniform.
Police said they were investigating how the deception went undetected for so long in what they described as a serious security breach. Police said disciplinary steps are possible pending the outcome of the investigation.
Police didn't identify the boy because of his age. He has been charged as a juvenile with impersonating an officer.
Dugan said the boy looks older than 14 and was motivated by a desire to be an officer, not malice or "ill intent."
The boy once took part in a Chicago program for youth interested in policing, so he would have been familiar with some procedures, perhaps helping him blend in, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.

I sure hope it disqualifies him! He's a liar and a manipulator, and he doesn't let the rules stop him from doing whatever he wants to do. I certainly don't want him to get arrest powers, a firearm and a badge. He'd be a menace to decent, honest people and would eventually trigger a corruption scandal in the police department.

what if a terrorist or criminal decided to impersonate an officer? if a child can do it so could they, the boy however had no ill intent and showed that the police are the ones who should be reprimanded.
the id wants to be an officer and every neative you've thought up could go in his favour, you'd have to lie, manipulate and not let the rules stand in your way if you work undercover so could that be in the boys future?

Undercover cops aren't supposed to lie to, manipulate and break the rules of the police department, only to do those things to the criminals.
I agree the cops should have picked up on the fact that he was a fraud and should have some repercussions for not noticing, but that doesn't mean he should be allowed to become a cop.
Maybe they became suspicious only when he turned down a free donut?

he wanted to become a cop, he tried impersonating one, he got away with it for hours. if he put that on his CV it would show he's got some experience
i still don't see why he should never be allowed to become a police officer, i'd rather he become one rather than someone who's known for committing assault.

Well, he's already known as someone who's commited impersonating a police officer. I should think that would disqualify him.
I realize the prosecuter might punk out and charge him with some lesser offense because he/she agrees with you about this kid but it's still what he did. Obviously this police department isn't too swift, but they are supposed to consider that kind of thing before letting someone join the force. I would think somebody would remember his name, however. He embarrased them and made them a nationwide laughingstock, all because he doesn't care what happens to anybody else as long as he gets what he wants.
Maybe I'm too hard on this crime because it was commited against me a few years ago and I still kick myself for being so stupidly trusting. I don't understand why you think so little of lying and manipulating to get what you want, however. It's a predatory behavior, IMO.

you seem to know him, or know what was going through his mind...
i'm going by the facts, from what i read he didn't want to humiliate or anger anyone, all he wanted to do was pretend to be a cop for a day, no harm, no foul. maybe he didn't think rather than didn't care?

That isn't a fact, it's a writer's opinion or it's his claim about his intentions. There's no way of knowing what was going through his mind at the time.
I know he took advantage of other people to get what he wanted, whether he was thinking or not. He violated other people for selfish gain. And as far as not thinking goes, he had to think about this for awhile to plan it and pull it off. And having participated in that program to show teens how the cops work, he knew some of the cops (hopefully not the same ones he met as a deceiver), so it wasn't like he didn't view cops as people.
His actions just violate my sense of fairness in dealing with other people. I don't lie and manipulate because I consider it morally wrong, a form of predation.
Well, I've got somewhere to go, so it'll probably be about 8-12 hours before I'm back at my computer. I don't want you to waste your time waiting by the keyboard for me sooner than that, I doubt I'll be on before then.
from your description, hell make a fine police officer.
bring 'im on board!
