and to all the OCD "I need to wash my hands" people:

8O i didn't realise having worms was a good thing... i'd rather stick with the allergens though.

when i saw the dirt and worms thing i thought the article was about earthworms rather than the parasite variety, i knew earthworms are eighty percent protein so i just assumed it was about them.

Most of the microbes we harbor are either benign or even beneficial, such as bacteria in our guts that aid in digestion. But good hygiene has long been correlated with better health.

I already knew this, everyday germs and dirt helps strengthen your immune system. Living in a sterile bubble is unnatural and makes you more susceptible to disease.

Being dirty all the time is not good for you. If you try to be overly hygenic, your immune system atrophies, and that is not good. BUt only a person who doesn't like to bathe would have written the OP for this thread.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness. And to good health.

So does living in filth.

or maybe the person who wrote the OP thought it was interesting and wanted to share the information?

While it is true that a certain amout of dirt/germs/viruses are necessary for good health, it is also true that extreme dirtiness is just as unhealthy as extreme cleanliness.

Without a certain kind of bacteria in our gut, we could not digest food. But if there's a certain kind bacteria in our food --the wrong kind-- we can get very sick and even die.

You need to find moderation. I hate dirt as much as the next person, but I'm not totally OCD about it.

It's probably true. A while back on animal planet there was a man who regularly ate clay. As it turns out clay in the proper dosage is very good for you and the man markets clay pills. I know clay and dirt are two different things but it doesn't surprise me that dirt may be good for you.

Wait, how long have we known this. Oh, forever, right, that's why I have an immune system.

I LOVE the smell of fresh dirt. Not that fertalizer crap, the real stuff. It's so hard to resist taking a bite of it.

I agree. There is a happy middle.
