90% of kids who act/dress emo are not. These people do not make sense, and are most likely trying to fit in. I first knew I was emo during one of my depression holes, I do not dress emo, and try my best not to act it.

People often called me "EMO" in the last time because I were very depressiv. I think it`s okay people to call like that if they want that but I just never felt like an emo.
I know some girl from clinic who would be the perfect stereotyp of emo. Black hair, to much eyeliner, pale, wears everday black and she is so often talk about how great pains are and something like that. In this moment when I knew her like three months I realized that I`m sure no emo.
In my school they everytime make jokes about carving and say, I would do that. What should I do?

That's why I don't like it when the term emo is used. People have arguments over whether they are emo or not. It's not even a real word, so nobody can actually be emo.

Long live logic!

Personally, I'm offended when people call me "emo". I'm not emo, I'm just a girl who wants to be an English male goth from the 80s. HUGE difference.

Being an emo doesn't mean one is just expressing their emotions. I am currently battling depression and have only have 3 friends in high school (though I do have church friends, I have to drive 40 minutes to get to my church), and I feel no need to go around wearing black and painting my face to look like a homicidal clown who ran out of all his paints except white, black, and a dab of red. It's a fashion statement. People think, "Hey! If great works of art are made in times of great depression or anger, why not do that all the time?" Sure Pinkerton (Weezer) and Funeral (Arcade Fire) are great albums, but you know what? Pinkerton was about Rivers Cuomo's inability to handle his new found fame and Funeral was about the deaths of family members of multiple members of Arcade Fire. It wasn't a fashion statement. Emos don't get that. Sorry for this mini-rant, but I just REALLY don't get it. I feel the need to express myself like this, rather than cutting myself. :P

A lot of people get pretty confused about the term "emo", including me! I agree with MyDogSasha about self-injury not being related to being "emo". The term doesn't bother me so much unless it's used in context of self-harm, because self-harm is serious and an addiction and not attention seeking. I don't like the way that some people refer to self-harm as being "emo" as well as referring to it being "cool", "hardcore" or "stupid and attention seeking". And that's really the only problem I have with the term, because I really do hate it when people say things like that, considering that I self-harm and wish that I didn't but it's the only way I can cope with things, and considering that I've attempted suicide and it was certainly not a fashion statement.

Just wanted to make it clear that I don't really think the term is related to the serious issues self-injury, depression and suicide, or at least that these things shouldn't be judged in that way.

Lots of people do use the term to describe a fashion style or a genre of music, and I have nothing wrong with that at all. Emo is a style of music and I don't have anything against any style of music- everybody has their own preferences. Emo fashion seems to involve the usual dark clothes and long fringes and hair, as well as dark make-up- and again I almost like that and it's a type of individuality.

I don't like the term emo when people are talking about depression, suicide, self-harm or any of those things. I don't like the fact that there are so many misunderstandings about these things, mainly because of this.

But like somebody else said, it's not even a proper word, so I think we should just avoid getting too upset about it :) There will always be things in the world we don't agree with.

I do think that there are too many misunderstandings especially about self-harm but I think that can be changed by making people more aware. It's not an attention-seeking behaviour, or if it is only in very rare cases, and most self-harmers will do anything to hide their scars. Many are ashamed of it but can't find any other way to cope.

Watch this, it explains self-harm a bit more. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pYVrhPajNE
Be careful though, it could be what some might call "triggering."

I had an acquaintance a while back who wanted attention, so she claimed she was emo one day and never was the same.
she would scratch herself with knives,lol... I mean, I used to cut, but when I did, I made sure it was actually a CUT. NOT A CATSCRATCH.
Lol. The ones I knew did it for attention.
she also told people who disliked emos that they were Racist.
lol. Because emos are a race apparently :p

That's funny I think emo boys are hot! I used to self harm because I was depressed not emo. I found life difficult and no-one seemed to understand. And it turned out why everything was so hard was because I have aspergers. This was such a relief finding this out and I've never been happier, I'm normal in my own way YAY!

I think people shouldn't be judged or have assumptions made about them if they want to dress a certain way (skinny jeans, eyeliner etc.). I admit to usig the terms "emo" and "scene," but only because that's easier than describing in detail every time I tell someone what kind of guys I like.

You're joking, right? Saying that all subcultures are stupid? That's one of the most ignorant statements I've heard in quite a while.

I suppose you are right. I take that back. Most subcultures are stupid.

ALL "subcultures" are stupid. They are all corporate divisions of capitalist monoculture.

Emo: A State of intense narcissism pretentiously wrapped in delusional, yet frivolous self-pity.

Even more can be found here: "You Could Be Emo If..."

Enjoy!

Wow... they sound like little pu**ies. I mean, I'm the butt monkey of my class, I was bullied non stop in 6th and 7th grade, and I've contemplated suicide, but still there's always a darkness before the dawn.
