Homosexuality - "coming out the closet"
I thought that by being "gutsy" it would help ease my guilt, strain or just get it over quicker...
I gave hints to the most accepting of my two parents (my mother) about it. Just little signs such as "I'm planning to buy a book, but I know if you found out about it then you'd flip" etc. Eventually, she guessed and I was almost stammering while trying to explain myself. I felt and now still feel like the Devil Re-incarnated
. That strange, bewildered look she gave me was agonising...
Afterwards, she started asking questions like "So... You don't find women attractive? ...But you find men attractive?"... It all feels so awkward and wrong... I've told her that I'm in denial, I'm slightly homophobic about the idea and that my sexuality could always change - but I can't help but feel that I've mentally scarred her for life...
I've told her to refrain from telling my brother or father about anything, but I truly need guidance at the moment.
It just doesn't feel right saying to your parents "I'm gay" or anything similar... You feel like you've just crushed all their hopes and dreams when you say that, and you just feel dirty and evil. Not to mention, being "gay" isn't the social "norm". Half the people in my school do it just to attention-seek and disrupt lessons, the others would never admit to it anyway because there would be alot of mocking or they're unsure... Quite honestly, I fully regret telling my mother that... I feel immensely guilty and angry at myself for no reason...
Found out the name for what I consider to have: Internalized Homophobia.
Basically, I consider myself Gay but, because of which, I hate my very guts. I can't tell anyone I know out of fear, I'm in denial that I am gay (despite considering myself such) and hate the very thought of being Gay. In a way, I know I am and I want to be, but in a way, I believe I will be universally hated and consider my own homosexuality more or less a bad thing... If others are homosexual, I wouldn't mind - that's their decision and life, not mine. However, when it affects me, I begin to deny it all and even grow to despise the fact that I am "gay".
Quoted from a source on the subject:
It was only through severely pushing myself that I ended up telling my mother, and even then I couldn't explain it to her. I felt that my homosexuality was a bad thing before, but after involving her, like I said, I felt like the Devil reincarnated (no offence intended to any philosophical believers).
The Wikipedia Article no doubt describes what is happening internally to me:
ok first-its not a decision.you are born that way.
are you religious?
why do you think it will crush all her dreams.unless you are religious of course, because gay people can have lives exactly as good as straight people.
you say that you feel like the devil because its not the social norm? well aspergers/autism isnt the social norm, indeed its highly stigmatized.do you feel like the devil because of it?

are you religious?
I am, indeed, a Christian - but that thought of Homosexuality vs Religion only bothers me very slightly.
Well, she is Catholic and my Dad's Protestant. I'm not exactly religious, but I have been baptised. Not only does the homosexuality go against their religion, but when people have a child they naturally assume he/her would grow up, marry a person of the opposite sex and have children. By being homosexual, I feel as if I am denying her of those hopes and dreams. I know we can adopt children or use some form of artificial insemination, but it still doesn't feel the same knowing. As well as the inevitable insulting and harassment she thinks I would get.
Not just that, but if you saw the shocked, bewildered luck she gave me for about 20 seconds after I'd told her... It was agonising and made me feel more guilty than I have actually felt in my life. Needless to say, it pretty much ruined my day yesterday.
I've accepted Aspergers. With Aspergers, as well as the insulting, I received help with it. Even with Aspergers, there would still be those willing to be friends with you. If anyone found out about my Homosexuality, I would be pretty much mocked by everyone, I would assume I would receive more prejudice from adults, my father would get into an unstoppable rage (and my brother would mock me) etc. Even worse, I know literally nothing about my community involving homosexuality, puberty is a changing process so it could always change (and, let's face it, the bad reputation would stay with me all throughout school whether I change or not) and I'm not even sure if I'm 100% certain that I'm ready to accept it yet or not...
All my friends pretty much walk around school with Girlfriends etc., when I have never, ever had one. I don't want one. I am not attracted by them in the slightest. However, I am buried so deep in that closet that the thought of coming out even to close friends paralyses me. The consequences if it goes wrong are immense. There are people who have been attacked and murdered due to their sexuality, and I believe that some people already want to do so to me because of Aspergers... Why give them more reason?
im still trying to wrap my head around this. im never prejudicial and i dont hate other people or dislike them because of the way they were born (e.g black, gay, crippled etc) so hope you dont get annoyd at my lack of comprehension on this issue.
it sounds like its your fear of what others will think thats affecting you not the actual fact that you're gay.
all parents are shocked when their children tell them, but they should love you unconditionally, and in this issue where there is no fault, no wrong doing i find it odd that they would get upset (especially religious parents, seems hypocritical)
and you can still get married and have biological children of your own thus solving the problem of grandchildren.
you're young anyway, you dont need to come out, theres no rush.
as you get older your peers will mature, the ridicule will dissapate (except from a few close-minded bigots)

I won't get annoyed.
True, it is fear of what other will think, but it's also fear of petty much everything else too. What am I meant to do now that I am gay? I've got step 1 (which I am struggling to do), which is tell my closest friends and family, but after that... Then what? I want to get involved with the community and hopefully find others that are gay, but I would have no idea where to start. In my school, there's a heck of alot of attention-seekers that pretend to be gay just for the attention, thus, I've had a lot of difficulty being to accept the normal people actually saying "I'm gay". Heck, every time I say the word "Gay" or similar, I cringe - as "gay" is a word commonly used in insulting.
I remember one specific time when someone asked "Who do you think is the gay-est person in the class?", I looked around thinking while one non-attention-seeking girl who claims to be homosexual was saying "Me! Me! Pick me!". Eventually, needless to say, I ignored her for about 10 seconds before speaking rather loudly (the whole class was talking, so no-one really heard luckily) "Oh, fine! You... Erm... [Name]!". I felt so guilty afterwards because it felt like I had just shouted right at her...
My mother wasn't tearful, but that look she made me feel completely and utterly angry with myself and guilty. Whether she was upset or not (the look suggested that she was more confused and bewildered), that look really, really affected me.
The thing is, I have this urge just to tell everyone close to me... I have no idea why, and I've never felt this urge before. Is it a hormonal thing? Or is it an impulse sent by the brain in an attempt to find guidance? I have no idea what it is.
I certainly hope so. The time that most teenagers "come out the closet", I've heard, is between 15-16 years of age.
you dont have to get involved in the "community" (a lot of gay people dont, you can just go about your life like a straight person. i.e getting a degree, getting a job, falling in love etc.)
and i dont know about the need to tell people, being gay doesnt define me so i dont feel the need to bring it up unless people want to know. it could be that you're panicking about being gay (still dont know why, its a natural thing) so you look to others to reaffirm/unconfirm it (which would be weird and pointless)
and your parents arent going to know that you're gay unless you fit the stereotype (flamboyant ,feminine) but most dont, and it doesnt seem like you do,so of course theyre going to be shocked.

The strange thing is that I actually want to. I want to be able to meet some gay people in the community. Hopefully some my own age, but some people nevertheless.
Probably, but I have no idea how to get out of the habit. In the past 2 days, I've told 3 people already... 2 of which are family...
True. I've just told my Brother (after originally telling my mother) and, although he seemed okay with it, my mother says I should tell my father about it. Apparently, if he feels like he's the only one that doesn't know, he's going to get really angry, really fast... But he's quick tempered as it is - so how do I do it? I'm so tempted to just send to his e-mail a book I plan to buy and hide in the bathroom (door locked) while he views it...
This, in itself, is making me feel "not normal", as most gays either never tell their parents or leave it until they're adult... Plus, I feel so wrong telling them yet I get the unstoppable urge that I must... I'm considering PMing some of the people who've suggested I should PM them with related issues above, for guidance etc.
I know I am gay, but it feels so wrong and it seems as if I am handling the situation incorrectly as well... Plus, the terrible fear that one day I'll wake up and go "Hey, I'm straight!" because I wasn't meant to be Gay to begin with (more accurately, I'm scared I would change my mind or regret it)...
EDIT: I really don't get it. I hear all the time about Aspies committing suicide (hence, alot take anti-depressants), they says gays are 2-3 times more likely to commit suicide - it's as if the odds are stacked against me, yet, I have never seriously attempted or thought of suicide (and I'm not on anti-depressants)...
Told my Dad. He was better with it than I thought. Still, all my parents convincing of "This is just a phase" is really quite depressing for me... I've been specifically told to stop researching about this, stop telling anyone and stop having anything to do with it because "I'm too young to know for sure". The thing is, I feel the need to mention this to other people now...
In confusion, I've sent the following e-mail to someone who deals with these kinds of problems at the local "Connexions":
Subject: Yet another Teen questioning his Sexuality...
Dear Sir/Madam,
As the title suggests, I consider myself to be "Gay" - but I don't say that with much pride (Internalized Homophobia, perhaps?). I'm 14 at the moment and pretty sure of my sexuality, however, due to the whole "It's just a phase" that my parents keep suggesting I place myself as "Questioning" both out of fear that I might be incorrect/change my mind and the fact that I have never actually felt good about calling myself "Gay" when we are all conformed to be "straight".
Assuming I do have internalized homophobia, it has gone pretty much to an extreme. I find any movies showing nudity of women secretly repulsive, but if any show male nudity I also feel the need to look away as I consider it not to be the sexual "norm"... There's also all the attention-seekers in my year that act as if they were "gay" just to receive attention from fellow students - that is probably the biggest thing stopping me from "coming out" even to my closest friends.
Well, being the half-term and everything, I decided to finally accept my nagging conscience telling me to "come out the closet" (That I consider myself "Gay"). Firstly, I told the only school friend I can really trust to keep a secret using the online features of the Xbox 360. He laughed at first (he's not the most kind person, but I do trust him not to tell anyone - plus the fact that just a few weeks ago I was helping him on his relationship troubles), then suggested I mention it to a specific teacher at school. I agreed to do so, however, the next person to mention to was whom I considered the most accepting of my two parents. She gave me the most deluded, shocked stare for about 20 or so seconds... I couldn't help but feel as if I had committed some form of evil sin by merely telling her. Despite this, she came out with "You're too young. It's just a phase." etc. Soon after, my brother and father found out, the latter of which agreed with my mother. They also agreed on the fact that the matter should stay strictly secret to all except the family and that one friend. It's those very doubts of my family's that made me change my opinion from almost certainly "Gay - yet in denial" to "Questioning". They also state there is no reason for me to announce that I am "Gay".
I've spent the past few days researching everything from "GSAs" to "National Coming Out Day" and much, much more. However, I doubt I'd be able to help host anything like that in my school. My thoughts are that, even if I do change my mind (If that is even possible), the knowledge would at least come in handy.
Anyway, to "drop the bombshell", as they say, I am suffering a hard enough time socially as it is. I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome just a few years back (which, assuming you don't know, if a mild form of Autism. Mild meaning that it doesn't handicap me mentally or physically in any real way, mostly just socially - however, clumsiness is a symptom of it). This means, sadly, that everyone who knows me pretty much fits me into the "Forrest Gump" stereotype (Well, when they hear "Autism", that's what comes to their minds) and, although it may have calmed down now, I previously had received enough bother as it is for the simple fact I have Aspergers. I'm clumsy, awkward and overall unattractive. Part of Aspergers is talking constantly about your own interests - another poor trait. Especially when the interests could be completely random (As with me, who knows alot about the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese History (Despite being of British descent) and Everything "Gentlemenly" (even including the "Gentleman's Martial Art" of Bartitsu) ). On the plus side, I'm predicted Straight A's, but I doubt that will nullify the negatives.
So why do I send this message? I'm not sure myself. Perhaps I seek the guidance and advice I did not receive from my parents. Maybe it's because I want to open up to someone at school and tell him ("him" being a friend of mine I sort of consider myself to have a crush on, but claims to be straight - despite his rather frequent joke-y flirts with friends), yet I am forbidden to tell anyone. Whatever it is, I'm hoping you will be able to empathise with me in this rather personal matter. Constant reminders from the family that it is probably just a phase are beginning to make me wonder whether or not I truly am deluded in some way, shape or form.

You know what? This is amazing: I can relate so much to the feelings you've described. I've known I was a lesbian since I was 12. I told my parents about getting crushes on girls, but they also told me that it might be a phase, so I agreed and waited. It wasn't long until I was sure about it, but every time I meet a nice guy who looks remotely attractive, I still wonder if I could ever have feelings for him. I remember searching around the internet for any information to help, getting embarrassed at the mere mention of the word "gay". My parents aren't religious, and if I think logically, I know they wouldn't mind, but I still can't tell them. It's not a logical feeling: we've just all been conditioned to think of homosexuality as something "different"; you know, it's easy to be open-minded about others, but it feels like it should just be something other people are. I've managed to tell my brother and some of my friends/classmates, but every time I mention it, I still feel nervous, and for some weird reason, my legs start shaking.
You said your parents don't believe you're old enough, but could you maybe talk to your brother? Might you be able to try and tell your parents how all this is making you feel, or perhaps just your mother? Plenty of the people I've told have had seemingly negative reactions at first, but accepted it when they got used to the idea. Do you see a psychologist or anything? I wonder if it would be good to talk to someone like that about the internalised homophobia.
I also understand the feeling of wanting to tell people. Whenever the subject of homosexuality comes up with someone I'm not "out" to, I just feel this strong urge to tell them; it's like it feels wrong admitting it, but it feels wrong not being able to admit it. *sighs* Aren't we humans just so frustratingly complicated?
If you're not allowed to tell other people, would it help to talk about it with someone who already knows? For me, it's reassuring just to know that there are at least some people who accept me the way I am. Also, sometimes I write about it: poetry, diary entries, that kind of thing. I don't know if you're into that, but it can be very therapeutic just to get your thoughts out.
As for your father, are you sure he'd be angry? I mean, you were worried about telling your brother, but he was okay, right? Sometimes when people are worried, they assume the worst. One of my friends is very religious, and on top of that, I went out with him for a while before I knew I was gay; he struggled with the fact at first, but he gradually accepted it. I'm not trying to pressure you into any hasty decisions (I've been in the closet myself long enough), but if your parents really love you, I would expect that they'd accept it eventually, even if it's hard at first.
Anyway, I don't know how much help this is, and I'm sorry if my thoughts are a bit scattered, but I just want you to know that you're definitely not alone in this, and, of course, I'd be willing to discuss it more if you want.
Edit: I had no idea I created a wall of text at first. I had to edit it and put spaces in between the paragraphs. ![]()
I have spoken to my brother about it, but he's only just starting puberty (aged 13) and isn't really interested in the slightest. My mother, when I told her, gave me the most bewildered look for about 20 seconds as I stood there feeling incredibly guilty and trying to calm her. At one point, I must have said "I'm not 100% certain, because it could all change" and that mere fact is what she has used to fill the void. "It's just a phase" she says, and I fear I'd break her heart if I were to tell her otherwise.
Sadly, I don't. Even if I wanted to, my parents would never let me. They're in a state of denial themselves, and are trying anything to "keep attention off me" (or so they say) by stopping me from ever telling anyone, and I have been constantly wanting to tell the school "Special Needs" Department... Their reply? "By telling them, they'll gossip to other teachers and the word would get out"...
Agreed with 100%.
I've been venting to the only friend I've told about it for ages. He hasn't spoken a word, and my parents are trying so hard to convince me that I shouldn't speak to him at all (because, apparently, "he'll tell others", despite having kept the secret for ages... Also, they say I should lie and say "I'm not sure" to him)...
As for my family, they're not an option for speaking to, obviously. As for poetry, I could give it a try. I am more or less on the route for straight A's, so it could be a rather fun... Erm... Literary practice, of sorts. However, I doubt I'll find time to fit poetry in on my long schedule of Gaming, Forum Watching and School, but I will try. I also plan to try reading, and have my eye on various books. Sadly, parents won't let me buy them due to homosexual content...
A while ago, I got my mother to tell him. He more-or-less sees it himself as a "phase" and that I'm "not sure" etc. Again, he supports the idea of keeping it secret and not telling anybody until "You know my sexuality", but the thing is that I already do...
Please do. There are many people who have said they'd willingly discuss it if I wished, then just left the topic. The problem being that I also want other user's input, opinions and thoughts added to possibly help decide more accurately.

Ah, right. Well, I suppose it might be difficult or uninteresting at that age, but isn't he interested in helping you? Is he not willing to talk, even if he knows what a hard time you've been having?

Well, I'm glad he's being a good friend, even if your family don't like you talking to him about it.
As for my family, they're not an option for speaking to, obviously.
Yeah, but I just had this thought that maybe if they understood how difficult this is for you, they'd try to be more helpful; obviously, though, I don't know your family, and have no idea how rigid they are in their views.

Sorry about that. Looking back on the topic, I can see that you mentioned telling him, but I must've missed it before.
Yeah...I do want to help, but it's hard to think of what to say: this is clearly a very difficult situation. I know this post isn't particularly insightful, but I will definitely keep thinking and try my best to help. By the way, has the Connexions person helped at all?
