That's called a defense mechanism. I can't name one person that has the strength of character to just straight up admit being in the wrong when called out on being a jerk on the spot. That part comes later. Sometimes it's harder letting go of your attitude than dealing with it.

Also, Bun's comment is bull. If you define a person as a jerk or an a**hole then you probably aren't intimate with the inner workings of their mind. Making such presumptions is called prejudice, and ya'll know what that feels like.
