I really hate the Autumn!! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !!
I'm now noticing the nights are getting dark earlier, and it's really depressing me. I am well, but I keep feeling that I've got a cold, and I know it's because of seeing damp/chilly mornings, darker evenings, and a teeny bit of wintery touch in the air. It all brings winter to mind, when it's really cold and you're glad to get in, and often when your nose feels cold you feel like you're getting a flu or a cold, so this is probably why I'm getting a little ''virul-curious''.
I reckon this is seasonal depression too, since depression can make you feel run down. In the early spring, I constantly feel full of beans, as though I am just full of energy and don't feel ill at all. Knowing the summer is round the corner is a happy feeling, but now it's September and summer feels very stale now, and now it's the onset of winter, which I get the snow anxieties all over again. And also Christmas, I cannot cope with Christmas, with everybody off work for about 2 weeks, just lounging around the house with the TV on all day, and nothing to do, and having unpredictable weather. I hate it!! !! !! !! !!
I know spring is only in another 6 months, but I've got to get horrible winter out of the way first. I wish snow wasn't true, I hate it!
ps - the only thing I don't like about spring is my cat is another year older.

I guess I'm the only human in the entire world being who hates the spring and especially summer. I'm so thankful the weather is finally cooling off. I hate hot and humid weather and I get sweaty very easily. I hate wearing shorts and sunscreen and bug repellant. I worry about West Nile mosquitoes and lyme disease and E. Coli and can't even walk a short way to the store without turning into a disgusting sweaty mess and feeling like I'll collapse. I hate the sun glaring into my eyes when I sleep in late, I hate that I get too warm sleeping under a comforter because they're the only blankets I'm comfortable with, I hate when I want to nap in the afternoon and it's still bright and blazing out, and I really REALLY hate the fact that summer was fun when I was a kid but now it sucks like nearly everything else does when you're an adult. I don't really enjoy swimming anymore but yet I feel I HAVE to swim when I get the chance because I won't be able to until next year.
At least I soon won't have to feel guilty about staying indoors with the fans and AC on so I don't roast when everyone else thinks it's beautiful out, when I would much rather stay home and play computer games or draw or read or work on crafts. Anything but go out and get skin cancer from the UV rays. Sunlight is deadly now and as a kid I used to go out and get burned or dark brown. I've got moles and spots all over me now and it's a wonder I don't look like a 90-year old.
Of course, Christmas shopping IS the worst event of the whole year, and you can't even sniffle without people acting like, "Omg she has swine flu everybody flee before you die!! !" Sheesh. ![]()
I usually get all my Christmas shopping done in about two hours on Christmas eve. Obviously, toys for the kids. For the adults, I get the same thing for everyone, either a pillow for the sofa, a small blanket for when you are sitting still watching tv or taking a nap, ... . Last year I got everyone door mats for their doors.
I don't wrap them up, I just put them in a big bag (or two or three) and let people choose the one they want. Since I usually don't know who all is showing up, this works best. If you don't show up on Christmas day, you don't get a gift from me. On the other hand, even if I've never met you before (that is, a friend of someone else in the family) and you show up, you get a gift, like it or not.
I never have any idea what I'm getting people until I step in the store.
By the way, the most useful Christmas gift I have ever received was two round ratchets for use with socket sets that looks just about exactly like these:

I see that your tagline says you are in Essex. I must admit that I don't know anything about the winter weather in the UK. Here in Texas, the summer heat can be nearly unbearable. Near the Gulf Coast, it is hot and high humidity. Here in the Texas Panhandle, it is much hotter, but a quite low humidity which makes it quite a bit more comfortable.
I've often wished I had the time and money to spend a summer somewhere in the British Isles. My first choice would be the Isle of Man for the motorcycle racing (the TT, GP, and Southern 100), but some place like Alderney might be nice for what I imagine would be a relative peace and quiet. And some place in the UK itself would be interesting as well, preferably in the lake district or up in Scotland.
As for Christmas, if it weren't for a few Christmas specials for British sitcoms, I would probably know absolutely nothing about Christmas in the UK. I remember one Christmas episode of Last of the Summer Wine where Compo, Clegg, and Blamire (I think) were sitting at a table eating their Christmas dinner wearing funny hats. I had never heard of that practice, but someone who had spent time there gave me an explanation of it.
But I know what you mean about everyone just lounging around the house. After Christmas dinner, I can take it about two hours before I can't stand it any more and have to go outside.
I love Autumn. Cold, dark and raining sounds blissful to me. But I hardly fit the normal viewpoints in most cases. For example, I go to confectioneries and buy entire bags of M&Ms in one color, gray. I'll leave that to the reader to interpret.
I used to look forward to Christmas, now we don't "do" Christmas or trees or presents or big dinners. My mother says it's because there aren't children in the house. And my brother who is a Jewish convert but doesn't actually practice and is really only a "Jew of Convenience", uses his religion as an excuse to break Christmas trees.
For those of you keeping score at home, my mother is a batshit lunatic who has been abusing me ever since my uber-batshit father walked out on her, she treats her dogs and cats far better than she treats her children. My brother is a batshit drug addict who beats people up to get what he wants, just like Daddy used to do. As for me, I've already got one suicide attempt in the books.
Sorry, tangential rant. Don't think there's anything wrong with you, TC. From what a few people have told me about London, it's a cold, murky and wet place 90% of the time. I hate the California heat, maybe you and I should trade? (There's probably a downside I don't see...)
Oh I love the rain (in winter). If I knew the UK had mild temperatures, around 3 to 17 degrees celcius, I don't think I would mind so much, especially if the rain keeps it at those temperatures. I do hate sunshine in winter because it makes the morning really cold and frosty with a bitter coldness in the air, and the whole day is cold and the ground dries up, and the more the ground is cold and dry, the more likely we might get snow and it'd settle.
Give me wet, mild winters any time, and give me hot, dry summers any time! In the UK the highest temperatures we get in the summer is about 30 or 31 degrees celcius, maybe 34 or 35, which is very rare and only lasts about an hour on a really hot day. But it's still better than being 16 celcius in the summer. But winters get really cold, tne temperature creeps below zero all day and then we get snow from stupid other countries. Where's the jet stream when you need it?! !!
I'm quite good on keeping track of the weather. Admittedly last winter we only had freezing temperatures and snow in Feburary, but in December and January we just had typical temperatures, like around 6 or 8 celcius, or even warmer, but everybody keeps saying ''oh my God, last winter was freezing cold for months!'' Also people have been saying that this summer has been awful too, and then when the temperature reaches 22 celcius, everybody's like, ''oh it's about time we had some warm weather!'', when actually part of July and the whole of August has actually been creeping up to around temperatures of 28 to 32 celcius. God, stupid people! Why don't people appreciate anything?!

Me too, yesterday I didn't even mind cycling home in the rain. The evening was so perfect and it had this awesome atmosphere I can't describe.

The autumn is my favourite time of year. I hate the heat of the summer (not that it ever gets really warm here, 20 in summer is a novelty), but it rains too and wearing waterproofs in the heat is unbearable. At least now it's cool when it rains. I also love the slightly muted colours that we get at this time of year. The sky just now is grey, but it's almost an off-white and quite bright, but it's cloudy, so the sun isn't blinding. The colour change is hard to describe, but I noticed it a few weeks ago and it lifted my spririts. The wind is howling too and the branches are moving around, which helps me remember that the world is alive.

I kind of envy you...I miss the autumn and the winter. I haven't seen a "real" autumn since I was 9 years old. I'm 34 now. So for 25 years, I haven't had the pleasure of seeing the leaves change color, smelled the leaves (I always imagined that's what reddish-orange would smell like) or completely ruined a neatly raked pile by pouncing into it. My mom always had to wait for me to go to school so she could rake leaves. Good times. But now, I live in a subtropical climate. For 10 months out of the year, it's summer. For the other two, it's spring. There may be one or two days in the entire year that it's genuinely cold and on those days, I truly feel alive.
I suppose we all want what we don't have. I used to like the spring and summer, but after living in them all year long, it's like living in a time warp. Imagine hearing the music from an ice cream truck while hanging Christmas decorations! Well, I don't need to because it happens here. It seems a bit surreal and sometimes I think, "No. It can't be December. In December, there's supposed to be snow. Where's the snow? Everything's green. It looks like we're getting ready for Independence Day (July 4)" And then, to calm down, I have to go inside, light a pine scented candle and drink some cocoa (these things remind my senses that it is, indeed, December.) I think that if I lived in a subarctic climate, I might yearn for spring and summer while hating the autumn and winter.

I'm a native Californian, I get pissy when the temperature gets below 60. I've had fantasies of migrating to the Southern hemisphere about this time for a few years now

You are definitely not he only one. It's worse for me though because I live in Florida where it routinely hits 100 F in the summer, and where we literally have mosquito-borne pandemics. We had West-Nile when I was in high school, and my grandmother said that malaria was common in her childhood, and her uncle died in childhood of yellow fever. That said, mosquito control is pretty good since the 2004 West Nile outbreak. It's really just the heat and the excessive sunlight (I hate wearing sunglasses, but the glare is unbearable so I spend a lot of time inside). I love the way the light starts to dim and take on an orange tint in the autumn, energizing me to come outside, and I like the winter even better, which is why I want to move to a colder climate, because we don't have much of a winter down here, especially with global warming and all.
As for Joe90, I totally understand your seasonal depression, but be warned, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
I actually love Autumn and Winter time, well until it gets dark before 5pm that is. I find it much easier living in cold weather. With the heat of the Summer it can make even doing the simplest of physical tasks a real drag, plus I get warm really easily in general so the Summer can feel twice as bad for me. There are so many bugs around as well, I can't even open the window at night as I'm guaranteed to get at least one bug come in after 5 minutes of it being open.
