I have an exceedingly strange problem this time around, but perhaps I should preface it with the fact that I am clinically depressed. Sometimes when I am watching something or listening to music that would otherwise not be related to any sad feelings. Sometimes it will manifest itself especially strongly if the idea of whatever it is somehow links itself to a good and positive memory in fact. I really do not want to exhibit such self-destructive thoughts, of course, and would do very well to rid myself of all of them. Any ideas? Thank you so much!

Erm, well you could listen to really lively music. Hardcore, Drum n bass, heavy metal. Any kind of music that takes you mind off reality and makes you think "...AWESOME". But I don't know. Also try wearing a poncho. I've heard it's impossible to be depressed in a poncho.

The hardcore suggestion sounds great...but does a poncho really help?

I would recomend Sikth, Boy Sets Fire aaaaaaaand Gallows. All good hardcore... well Gallows is hardcore punk but it's just as good.

And I'm not sure about the poncho, but it DOES sound like a solid plan. If a poncho isn't enough try a sunbraro (spelling?) as well.

I think I've had this in the past. I remember from my middle school days that when there was certain song that I heard on the radio a bunch of times during the summer I would get the song stuck in my head around the time school started. Then I'd feel slightly weepy / nostalgic whenever I heard the song again for a while. It'd remind me of memories from the summer but simultaneously increase my anxiety and sadness about the new school year.

This is exactly how I feel! Its as though I'm reminded of the good event that its connected to, so I feel I can never have that sort of happiness again.

When the music upsets you does it bring you to tears or anything? Crying is great catharsis. I use music to epitomize my sadness and then flush it out.

I do my best to hold it back based solely on the idea that I should never cry. Should I be avoiding this mentality?

Not crying = BAD idea.

Sometimes, you just need to get it out.

Of course, it's not a good idea to be crying in public.

So...go to your room if you must cry. But don't hold it back.

Also...i know the feeling. I have deleted several songs on my itunes just because of the memories they are linked to. And they were darn good songs, too. Oh well...

Thanks for the advice. Do you think I should avoid things, or do you think I would get over it?

The only way to get over the nostalgia feeling for me is to do something fun. Do something that gets your brain thinking about the future rather than the past.

I think maybe it helps to indulge in feelings for a short period to get that cathartic relief but then as soon as you feel a little better you have to find something else to occupy your mind or else the respite will wear off and the sadness will come right back.

There are a lot of things I can watch or listen to that can have a positive affect on me one day, then a negative one another day. I think it depends a lot on your current mood, so as your depression is clinical, I would suggest first to TAKE YOUR MEDS! lol. All I did was skim through your first post. You do take meds right? If you don't yet, try to find things that would make you laugh, such as a funny tv show or something of the sort. This helped me a LOT when I struggled more than I do today as far as depressing emotions go.

I might be overly enthusiastic (spelling?) but this really sounds like it was made for us. :)

Umm. Meds aren't always a cure all for depression. Oh how I wish it were that simple.
