I alienate myself from people because I feel like I can't relate to them. I have very few, (maybe none) real friends.
I can relate to this. I spent most of my life feeling/being very much like that. I had "acquaintances" and just a few people who I actually considered "friends," but for the most part I was very much alone. Difference is, I liked it that way (most of the time, anyway).
People have told me this over and over--I can't stay isolated and cut off forever. Yes, it's safer that way, there's less aggravation, less drama, etc. But, I have found that we all get a little bit lonely every now and then.
It's also 100% true that "you give your own life meaning." That's something that NO OTHER PERSON can do for you. Your own meaning comes from you and what you do that makes you happy.
I think that everyone needs to find whatever makes their life "pointful" before they can start having really meaningful relationships. It's always better to be happy and comfortable with yourself before you can start feeling that way around others (or they can start feeling that way around you).
You've got people here who care, hale_bopp. Don't forget that.

I've been feeling the same steez lately. Seemingly not nearly as bad, but it's the first time I've really felt the depression creeping in a couple years now. I'd been feeling bad for a bit, then I went on vacation for a couple weeks and in the process I saw my parents for the first time since Christmas and one of my best friends for the first time in longer than that, and it was so awesome that I was pretty crushed just by the simple fact that I arrived home.
I have friends here, a couple pretty good ones, but it's not the same. And since I moved out of the northwest I feel like I've been overly trusting of people, maybe because all my interactions with my oldest, closest friends have been reduced to quick, superficial phone calls (which is partially my fault because I don't really like talking on the phone anyway). I really want to see the best in people, but I don't want to dig myself a hole personally or professionally in doing so, and it's been tricky trying to find that balance.
I'm not a highly depressive person, but when it does happen I really crash and burn. That's not something I can have right now, and just the prospect of it really tilts me out. I'm exactly at the point I want to be in life (at least the best I could be at this point), but those things that have been missing from being so (as you put it) detached from everything I left is wearing on me pretty bad.
It all is bad news dude. I can't relate to your exact situation, but I definitely feel the sentiments. Times get raw, and it never just disspates on its own, all you can do is fight it like a motherf**ker and truly appreciate the small victories that you achieve in the process.

Sometimes I feel I can't relate to anyone either. I guess I'm just very unique. Sometimes I wish I could spend a day at a place where everyone is me ... Or transform everyone else into me. It's too bad that's impossible.
I don't trust a lot of people. It seems like most people will stab at you the minute you show a psychological weak point or sensitivity. That's what happened to me in high school. I had nobody to talk about my depression with.

I hope you are feeling better. I was not ure what to write in the thread because I have similar problems, and I would lke to know the solution also for myself....
One day....
