I did secretarial work for 12 years. You can sit immersed in computer work for hours. There are other people on the board who do secretarial work too. I dont know why you think it is hard.....

I'm sorry you are in this situation.

Here where I live there are non-profit organizations that help to place people with barriers to work into jobs that suit them. In this case, having an official diagnosis helps because the employer would have an established relationship with the non-profit. The employer would already know your background, so you wouldn't have to "sell yourself" in the interview.

If you did not want to disclose your diagnosis to your employer, there are places like Vocational Rehabilitation that can coach you on writing a resume, and interviewing skills. I would not have been brave enough to apply for my job if I had not gone.

In the short term, would a temporary shelter be an option? Since you do not feel safe in your home, you may be able to find a shelter based on that alone.

Best of luck to you.

I am, but it's only part-time and doesn't pay anywhere near enough to support myself.
Even if I had enough teaching work to support myself, the amount of human contact required would burn me our fairly quickly.

Any reasons why your dad said that? Did he mean his own kids?

He's in pain because of a couple of conditions he has; he hasn't achieved his goals because he's given up on everything he's ever done, and he's blaming my brothers and I. Yes, he meant us.

You could learn how to type and do numerical data entry and spreadsheets. Find a website on the internet that could teach you these skills. Then go for a data entry job, or do office filing. Noone else really wants to do these jobs, and if you are good at them the employer will love you, and love the fact that you can sit at a computer doing their monotonous dogsbody work. Just be quiet at work and they will peg you for a shy, conscientious person.

Now that's not a bad idea. I can touch-type with accuracy now, I'd just need to get my speed up a little.

I have approached the government job-placement service and they were completely unhelpful; I might do some research on what other organisations might be able to help.

I'm apparently very good at writing resumes/cover letters, and I've learned good answers to interview questions; I think it's mainly lack of experience that's hindering me. I have had job search training and they were somewhat nonplussed as to why I couldn't manage to get a job.

Possibly.

I'm assuming the goverment employement organisations you used were the usual ones, Wesley and Work Directions (now called Jobfind Centre)? They didn't help me much either back when I was unemployed :?.

I don't suppose you've heard of Centacare? It's a catholic run social services organisation which runs an employment agency. IIRC they kinda specialise in people with disabilities. My first BF got a job through them because he was diagnosed with Bipolar. I don't think being a practising catholic is a pre-requisite to get help from them either.

Maybe you should start documenting some of the troubling things your dad is saying to himself. Has he in his mutterings expressed wishes to harm anyone in the family?
If so I think some mental health intervention for your dad is needed (primarily for the safety of your family and you).

Somebody's grumpy. On the bright side, if you get your own place, you won't have to hear that crap.

My mother once told me I might as well be dead because she had just decided I had autism and had read that autistics had no love or feelings ofr others.

My dad, meanwhile, would sit at the computer with his music blasting away in his headphones, making gunshot noises and saying "f*****g b***h; get out of my life. Then a volley of gunshots, then a pause and another series of gunshots. I think the first series was for my mom, and the second one was probably for me. He had been drinking when he would do it, but someone told me he was doing it to manipulate us into leaving.

I tried going to Centerlink, and they brushed me off by saying that unless I was on an umemployment benefit, they couldn't help me.

Yes, I have heard of Centacare, but I didn't know that they specialised in people with disabilities. I'll check them out.

It's only that one comment that he's made that has expressed a desire for harm to come to others, but he has said things like "I should just kill myself", and he seems to think that everyone in the family is against him. He won't get help; I've suggested it to him in the past.

I have been planning to record some of what he says.

If I could afford to, I would.

Some people shouldn't raise children.
