To all of you punks who get on the Internet and b***h about how much your parents suck...

My parents are complex people, like me. They're definitely not abusive, nor are they a perfect supercouple. In high school they pushed me to my limits, not for any selfish purposes, but because they knew inside that I was capable of doing great things if I put my mind to it. I was, and I still am, disciplined whenever I act out or misbehave; if you try to bring your attitude problems out on MY parents, your ass is going to be in a sling, because they don't take it, I sh** you not.

So what if your computer gets taken away from you? They survived without Facebook, Google, etc., making do with what they had. So what if you're grounded from your Ploystation/HEXbox 360/WeeWee? Your parents played a game, a game that got them to where there are now in your life: the roles of your mother and father. Soon, you're going to realize that you're playing that same game too. It's called:

LIFE, b***h.
And you are losing it.
So get up off your ass and play that game instead of WoW.
It's right outside that bedroom door.
Go ahead and open it.

Well said!

As much as I admire those who do well for themselves after going through a tough time - it doesn't affect everyone like that. Some people end up trying to do anything to improve their situations, and others are convinced through what others say to them that they're too useless to do anything, and so naturally they give up.

In other words - some people want to prove their bullies wrong, and others simply don't have that drive. Some people are born with a drive, and sometimes they do well. For the ones that don't - they've been through hell enough too, and it's even worse because they feel helpless and have been convinced by others that nothing they do will improve their situations. So why punish these individuals even further?

Something tells me there may be something going wrong in the original posters life and they want to bring down other people to make themselves feel better. Essentially this person hates on others, because they hate themselves. That's all I can really come up with from reading the original post.

My brother has often blamed our dad for his downfall, and at times has used him as a scapegoat, similar to those targeted in this well-said rant.

My brother also has AS like me, but is somewhat worlds' apart, as, granted I got my fair share of abuse from my dad before he was finally kicked out, but my way of coping just makes me easily manage to put behind everything he did, and not think twice, whereas my brother has spiralled into a stream-of-consciousness of self-pity, despite inexplicable knowledge and skills.

That's not what I intended. The original post was aimed at people who lurk around the Internet and blast the threads with their bullcrap about how much their life sucks when they don't suck.

While I can tell the OP's intentions were good, I guess the translation got lost somewhere...

Note to OP: Chances are it's not the parents themselves, but rather the parents' damage to the subject's self esteem. In which case the point of this would be to raise self esteem, not help them try to solve the issue (Which probably requires some of it in the first place)

In the regard of getting them some, I'd say you did quite poorly ;_; You came across as a bit harsh xD

your thread says to all who are doing nothing with their lives, not everyone who's going nowhere plays WOW or thinks their parents suck. Not to mention many people here have much worse problems than thinking their parents suck.

If you put it that way, I don't have any problem with it, it's a good attitude to fight for what you want in life.

But if someone starts calling everyone who expresses sadness as "punks who b*tch and play WoW all day", this has nothing to do with inspiring people to do their best but simply is a display of arrogance.

It's also questionable if it's up to you to define for someone else what "whining" is and whether or not they're allowed to do it. I could argue that the OP is whining about other people being too whiny. The post just doesn't strike me as particularly helpful or constructive, but of course that may just be my impression.

This pretty much.

Everything from this point is addressed to the OP: I have no idea why you thought this thread was a good idea at all or why this particular sub-forum was the appropriate place (the part of the site dedicated to understanding and caring for each other). A lot of people in a pretty fragile state could read what you wrote and be really quite upset by it. Your thread title included probably a huge portion of people on this site and you have no idea what is going on in people's lives. Some people try really bloody hard every single day and still struggle and sometimes need to vent. Some people are dealing with a lifetime of mental illness and, implicitly, you included a bunch of those people in your post. Who do you think you are exactly to make those judgements about people? IMO: keep these thoughts to yourself in future or, at the very least, be a little more careful with your wording so that it doesn't sound like you are attacking a large portion of the posters here who have genuine problems and come to this specific sub-forum to vent about them. I repeat: you have NO idea what is going on in people's lives - pretending like you do and attacking people based on that opinion makes you sound like an arrogant, judgemental fool. Sorry.

If you want to express a controversial opinion then take it somewhere else than here. It's all in the title of the sub-forum - "The Haven". Havens are places where people are supposed to be free of attacks, vitriol and judgement. It's pretty funny that you mention WoW because the tone of this post makes it sound like it could have come straight from that armpit of the internet that is the WoW forums.

The point of this thread is for people to vent their emotions without dealing with fear of being attacks for their feelings. I've violated this principle on more than one occasion myself, but that alone does not change the fact that the OP felt the need to vent without concern for being bagged on.

I may not quite agree with everything he said, but I wholly agree that he has the right to say it.

I agree with you on most things Fnord but not entirely on this one. I absolutely agree that the OP should have the right to express his/her opinions and to vent but when those opinions are negative ones aimed at people using this specific sub-forum for its intended purpose (i.e. getting support) then I strongly believe that this isn't the place. A person in a bad state of mind could have been really hurt by those comments and, while people do NOT have a right to not be offended or upset, there are times and places for these things and this specific sub-forum wasn't the right place for this rant. Had it been anywhere other than the Haven I would have not replied and left him/her to get on with their thing but this part of the site is the place for understanding and kindness, not for vitriol.

The OP's posts do not seem to be directed at any one person ... unless I haven't been paying attention ... so there is no specifically personal attack being made, except for maybe a post or two against the OP.

Enough to ask the mods to close this thread, perhaps?

invisiblesilent wrote:

Oh, yes they do! Anyone has the right to be upset about anything that upsets them, whether or not they have a valid reason to be upset. There is such a thing as being too sensitive. Besides, if people did not have the right to be upset, then your rants against this thread would likely have been deleted by now...

Yes, it is. This is The Haven, where people are encouraged to rant, as long as they do not violate any rules in doing so.

Do you have no kindness or understanding for those who express their "vitriol", or is your compassion reserved solely for for those who seem adept at posting tear-jerkers regarding their misery and sadness? Even angry young men need understanding and kindness now and then, not just depressed little girls. Maybe if a little understanding and kindness were directed at these angry young men, they wouldn't feel so much anger.

I just figured the OP was bitching about people who rant about their parents normal parenting skills like being grounded or having privileges taken away and calling it child abuse and parents making their mistakes due to not knowing they had a condition and not forgiving them for it. I thought everyone else was actually serious when they told him things like "well said."

My mom has made mistakes with me too and then she figure it out and then stopped and understood me better.

I wish that were true with mine. I got diagnosed over a decade ago by a psychologist that cost a lot of money, but my mom still can't accept my diagnosis of AS. I think she fully accepts my diagnosis of TS, though. She seems to partially accept my diagnosis of ADD. And sometimes she accepts my OCD diagnosis more easily than I do. But AS is the "main" diagnosis and I wish she'd accept it.

Lol tbh. No, I wasn't personally offended by it at all. Funnily enough at age 29 my parents do not attempt to ban me from WoW or take away my X-box  and until I became pretty mentally ill a few years ago I was rather happy with the things I had been doing in life.

And you don't think that making threads which insinuate that the people who post here are "punks" and "b****es" violates the rules? You don't think that marginalising the feelings of the people who are using this forum for its intended purpose violates those rules either?

As ayla said: When the angry young men express their anger by making sweeping statements which implicitly include huge swathes of people (the thread title says it all) then they deserve to have it called out. I find that pretty objectionable. I made no comment whatsoever on whether they deserve kindness and understanding because yes, most people do at one time or another but NOT when they are directly attacking people who have done nothing to said angry young man to deserve their ire. The same person could post a thread tomorrow and, as long as it did not include foul mouthed rants which attack the people using this forum for its intended purpose, I would have all the understanding and patience for him I could muster.

TBH now Fnord I can't help but get the feeling you are being either deliberately argumentative (devil's advocate?) or deliberately obtuse.
