^^^ VERY good point. Some of WP's most notorious insult-slingers do so simply to discredit someone with a conflicting view or differing opinion.

Call the person stupid (and hopefully convince others to fall in line behind them) then their opponent's perfectly valid opinions/facts no longer have any value... then claim they're the "smart" one and their opinion should be deemed the only correct one allowed. Dissenters will be publicly shamed.

This tactic is all too common in both the real world playgrounds, and especially on the internet where they can fling their feces without fear of serious retribution.

If it comes up in debate - it's more likely this diversionary tactic.

If it comes up when you're trying to order lunch (or similarly routine tasks) there may be a legitimate concern. ;)

Can you give a link to a thread where this has happened?

Was it one like this:-

http://www.wrongplanet.net/postp5401157 ... t=#5401157

I saw this thread and saw how people were reacting to the OP's thoughts and decided to steer clear of it as it looked to me as if people hadn't understood the OP's premise and were ridiculing them for their ideas, which I had thought perfectly reasonable

If I see the tone of argument some people are taking I can tell whether they are likely to listen to reason and I could see they weren't likely to and I wasn't in a mood to argue the toss so avoided the thread

If I'd been on there I would probably have taken the stick like a weather vane and you'd have avoided it probably

Regarding that particular thread, the notion that Autistic people constitutes a different race is extremely absurd. The only way I can understand that someone might say it is if they really don't understand the concept of race.

That's your opinion

I've often thought myself that we are like a different species and it is the recognition of this difference that causes the antagonism between us and NTs. Race is just another way of looking at it.

The idea of thinking of ourselves as a different race is less absurd than the idea we are aliens anyway
- note I said 'idea of' ie we're thinking about the idea, not saying it's a fact

There's no need to shout people down just because you don't agree with an idea - that is not respectful debate

I'm not shouting anyone down, but I am pointing out the total absurdity of their wacky position.

Referring to an autistic race is certainly one way to make sure you aren't taken seriously by anyone who is intelligent. It's kind of like running around trying to convince people that the world is flat or that there are reptilian aliens from other planets living here. Don't be surprised when people automatically categorize you as being some kind of nut.

One thing I have observed with being of a higher intellect than the majority of the population, is that one can think on a level that is above the understanding of your peers, hence, because they cannot understand you, they consider it must be that you are stupid.

The people I have known are far more likely to recognize someone who is intelligent as being intelligent, not stupid.

People do term ideas about which they disagree to be stupid, but in doing so I don't see them as calling the person stupid.

Thats naive.

Ironically- intelligent people are often the most idiotic about recognizing intelligence in others, and leap to the conclusion that anything they dont understand is 'dumb'.

I've heard some intelligent people say some really stupid things. That doesn't mean that I think they aren't intelligent, just that in domains outside of their expertise, they don't have much in the way of common sense.

For example, I read some comments written by some people about Monday's tornado in Moore, Oklahoma and the death of so many kids in the elementary school that was hit. They couldn't understand why the school didn't load all the kids on buses and drive them out of the path of the tornado. When people write things like that, it does make me wonder about their sanity.

You are not stupid. Sometimes people don't give due consideration to some of the things they say, or there is an misunderstanding on the part of one or the other.

I had these horrible friends in Jr. High who used to call me stupid constantly. Then when I would prove I was smart, they wouldn't understand me because I actually like using my vernacular instead of neglecting it, but I had to dumb down my normal speech for them and it made me "stupid". People are awful sometimes and you're a great person because you're you and there's only one you in the whole world. (As cheesy as that sounds...) There are good and bad things about every person, and there are good things about you. Nurture those good things and you'll do great, and try not to let people bother you so much. Find the people who like you and stick with them, everyone else can go suck eggs.
