My condolences. :( We had to put our St. Bernard down earlier this year because he had arthritis so bad, it got to a point where he could barely walk anymore. He was 9 years old. My mom liked him very much, so you can imagine how devastated she was when he passed away.

RIP Brutus

Dogs are the best. He had a good and full life with such a close companion. I know it hurts. Time, and perhaps a new dog, will ease the saddness in time. If you don't think you can love a new dog as much as the old, you may be surprized. The new one eventually (it takes a little time) gives your brain a kind of mental reset. Consider a rescue as well as puppy. You can skip the destructive side of puppyhood as a plus and you will be making a lonely dog happy. I have two. I would have more except that seems to be the limit as to what I can manage and give ample attention to.

Yeah rescues are great... Joe was a rescue and claimed me when he was 3. We have 3 other dogs and they are all great. We live on a farm. We have 5 horses as well and the day I had to put Joe to sleep was the same day the equine transporter came to take 3 of our horses to Pennsylvania whe we are moving the end of this month. Sooo the two horses left were pining as their buddies were not around and two of the three (one is a livestock guard dog so he wasn't as involved with Joe) were not themselves and mopey. They are great and I enjoy all they are but they are not the hiking, tree climbing, follow-me-any and everywhere mate. I know time will make it not as painful but I used to say that " I get dibs on dying first, Joe". I was in an emotionally abusive marriage and Joe was there for me. I keep busy and that helps... It is at night when I miss him most and hubby is out-of-town :(. We will probably get another dog when we get all settled in tho... We seem to always have four dogs... Don't know why. W will be getting sheep when we move so that will be something else to busy my day as well... I am going to become a shepherdess!! We are going to get the next dog from a LGD rescue tho. I MUCH prefer the grown up dogs to puppies. There will always be Joe.
