I hope for some help with this issue. there's this guy who has hurt me many times before, in various ways. he even grabbed me by the shirt once and threatened me. the cops wouldn't take him away for that, but they made him give me back something he stole so I figured it was over. until he walked past me near the apartments where I live, when I noticed it was him, he started being a total Jerk and saying all manner of nasty things, and he made extremely disgusting gestures in front of the neighbors children too. I should've called the cops but I was so upset that I didn't know what to do. this all happened early this year.
But, his most recent attempt to harm me has come through emails. I never gave him my email address, so I don't know how he got it. since August 10th, he has been sending me annoying emails every few days. I didn't notice it until now because I don't use my email much. but I've had to change my passwords for several accounts such as my EA origin or my StarCraft account. and as I was doing this, I noticed an email from him, it said something along the line of "Hey how are you? Awesome Story/Video/website" and each email contains a link to a different website. Of course I'm afraid to click that link, since it's likely a virus or something else bad. I don't know what to do. maybe I should call the cops but even if I do, will they do anything about it?
I don't know if it's possible to block emails or not, but even if it is, I'm not sure if I should, because if I do. the evidence to prove he's a bad guy will be gone...
What's the best thing I can do?
How proficient are you at reading email headers? if your email client supports it, there should be an option to show all headers , per RFC 821. You can usually track down the sender by looking at the path the mail took to get to your mailbox. Once you track down the originating site, you can email the postmaster for that ISP and have him take action against that user.
