Almost got into a fight in my neighborhood over my dog

He overreacted,but some people are very afraid,even to the point of a phobia,of a dog.
And he could be just a jerk looking for a fight,best to call the dog and walk away.
If he had provoked you to the point of you guys fighting ,your dog would have bitten him to protect you,and the poor little kid would have to see all that drama.It could have gotten nasty.

Dogs should be on a leash. Not everyone knows your dog and whether it bites or not. Maybe they or the child was afraid of dogs or had been bitten before.

There are leash laws in most places.

I recently had a neighbor that would let his dogs in the unfenced yard with no leash. One ran out in the road and got hit by a car and had to be put down. Leashes are for the dog's own safety too.

Nonsense, I rarely come within a couple of hundred yards of people when I'm out walking my dog, most people are dots in the distance and you say my dog should be on a lead? Nonsense, you probably don't even own a dog.

Fine when they're walking to the place you're going to walk them, but people don't tend to walk their dogs on a crowded street, they use the street to get to where they're going to walk the dog and its good etiquette to put your dog on a lead when there's someone else there/ when someone else has their dog on a lead, but keeping your well controlled and well trained dog on a lead at all times is nonsense and counter productive, a great benefit of walking your dog is the socialising aspect and he gets none of that on a lead.

I have a dog. She is always on lead. It takes just one incident to lose a dog. I will do all I can to prevent that. In any case, where I am there are leash laws. I respect them. I don't care for those who ignore the law. Too many peoples' off lead dogs have attacked mine in the past. Please for your dogs' sake people, keep them on a leash.

I am also aware of the fact others don't see my dog the same way I do. They may be afraid of her even though she's a Border Collie. She is well behaved and walks nicely.

One more thing, I live in a city. I know leash laws differ according to area and country.

I guess I can see how a parent would worry about a strange dog coming near their kids, but that's a pretty violent reaction.
