You've got great diving on the west coast, kelp forests in CA and very cool widlife in the Seattle area. This is a sport that attracts a high number of aspie types, perseverating, one-topic geeks. The most unjudgmental group of people I've ever countered. You don't have to be terribly athletic either since you don't have to deal with gravity when you are diving.

BTW, I grew up land-locked too.
