Should I renounce Christianity?

The reason it's in the Haven is because of my concerns about the social ramifications of my beliefs.

I do believe that everyone needs to know where they are at in regards to their religious beliefs though. I think with the way things are going everyone will have to make a decision of what side they are on - especially the Christians.

If your beliefs are important to you,don't change.All religions have extremes.Ive met some Christians that were the most intolerant bigoted people ever,and some that were the finest examples of how a good person should be.My brothers and sisters in law are very devout,they are tremendous people and their faith has helped them thru some very difficult times.Find a church with liberal views and just be an example of what Christianty is suppose to be about,love,tolerance,forgiveness.
Once I was Christian,Episcoplian.I found Buddism more in line with my beliefs.

I am still willing to blatantly call myself a Professional Conspiracy (Coincidence) Theorist and you know how Atheists (Materialists in particular) and the Main-Stream feel and regard and are about such "Crazy People" ... ;o

I just don't feel Tex should renounce the beliefs he has spent his life building up owing to a few extremists.

I don't feel being a Christian would have social ramifications for Tex.

I think, possibly, that NOT being a Christian might actually have social ramifications, since he is in Texas (I assume).

Of course, Tex might have a different impression. And I have to respect that.

But I truly hope, in my heart, that he doesn't let a few extremists determine how he worships his God.

Believe in what ever you want to. You can follow your faith if it seems relevant to you.

The problems start when people believe others who think differently should be forced to conform to their way.
You do not need to feel in any way responsible for the actions of others if you disagree with those actions.
Resist all attempts of censorship.

You have made me feel better about things. I do get discouraged a lot about various things, but having a great circle of friends, whether online or IRL, helps tons.

Well don't worry. It doesn't really sound like your faith is in Jesus anyway. Jesus says this:

Mark 8:38 - If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

But if you do want to be a Christian, it will require everything:

Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. If you prefer your comfort, safety, and status before men, then don't be a Christian.

In terms of violence, Jesus condemned those kinds of things:

“Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.

It is damnable for a Christian or anyone to commit acts of violence like what happened in Orlando. But that is pretty obvious.

For that matter it was carried out by a psychopathic ISIS member. And they're definitely not Christian by any means.

Christianity's holy book is the Bible, not just the New Testament. One can find justification for stoning gays to death in the Bible.

Don't let a few fanatics determine what you base your life, your morality on.

If somebody makes you a pariah for your mainstream Christian beliefs, that somebody has a really BIG problem--you wouldn't want to be friends with that person, anyway.
