I had to euthanise my cat, when she had cancer. It was hard, because I'd had her for eleven years. But when she couldn't keep food down, after the surgery, and the vet was suggesting chemo, I refused. She wouldn't have understood why she was being made to suffer, just so I could keep her around. People can at least understand or seek to understand physical pain, but animals don't have that capacity. I had a friend whose cat got sick. It was pretty old, but my friend had this cat on all kinds of medicines, injections, etc. The cat died anyway. I felt it was unspeakably cruel, but that was her choice, I guess.

I find hearing about stuff like this hard to take, I can't bear to think of an Animal suffering.

Yeah, me too. We almost got into an argument because I kept telling her to let the cat go, and stop torturing it with medicines that weren't going to cure it. The only one benefiting from those pills was the vet! :x

I deeply regret putting my dog through chemo. I'll never do it to another animal.

I have been really attached to the dogs my family has had, and was completely devastated when we came home from a vacation and my dog, my best friend in the whole world, the only one who would listen, was dead. My advise is to be thankful that you are with your dog and you will be able to say goodbye. I know its hard but your dog sounds like its in pain and if thats so it might be better to put it down. But as I said be thankful that you will be able to say goodbye. And as for dealing with the death of a close friend even if its a pet, just take it slow. Its going to be hard but just think about all the good times and don't dwell on the death but rather the amazing life you had together. Hope my advise helps. Peace.

Here's a possible solution that a freind in Maine had. Sadly, Sadie died in 2003.

I was attached to my pet hermit crab, Claire, who died a few years ago. In my first year of special ed, year 8, which was also my first year of high school, our teacher decided that we should have a class pet - she got a hermit crab for each person in the class (there was only 6 or 7 of us.) I chose the one with the plain, boring shell, as I thought it looked cute. At first, I thought it was male, and named it Hermie. Then, when the vets came to tell us about pets, they sexed our hermit crabs and that's how I found out that Hermit was in fact a girl! I named her Claire, after my favourite Gym Leader from Pokemon Gold. She was such a lovely hermit crab, and loved everyone. When my teacher left (which was sad, because she's the best teacher I ever had), we got to take our hermit crabs home. Claire ended up dying a week or so later, as we didn't have a heater for her. I still miss her a lot, as she was the best pet I have ever had... She was also a friend to me, even though she wasn't human.

RIP - Claire.

I'm very attached to my dog, Chico. Chico is one of my best friends. I used to tell him, that he was the only person in my family, who understood me, even though he wasn't a person. He has all this unconditional love to give me. It's nice to receive that love, in a world filled with people, who only love conditionally.

Yes very much so and I find it highly offensive when NTs decide to make "jokes" about cats like that there is cat on the menu, if mine is naughty why dont ypu put him down etc NTs seem to think this is humor I do not.I doubt they will ever understand my attachment to cats and my in particular. I have just let my mum know by email thaT these things are not funny and are offensive.

Yes, I am VERY attached to my pets. When my rabbit died, I cried for weeks.
I'm sorry that this has happened. I know that it's hard when facing a decision like this. You just have to put your own needs aside, though, and think...what is best for the animal?
If you have to have her euthanased, it will be hard to get over I know...but keeping her alive when she is in so much pain, is so cruel.

My dog injured herself again and I was so worried that I would have to get her put down. But it seems that she was having a reaction to one of the drugs she was on and once she was taken off that she picked up and then using glucosamine and an anti inflammatory has had a remarkable effect. She is far from perfect but is much improved.

I am very pleased. I love my dogs. I love them more than any person I know.
