*Sigh* Why does Wikipedia have to be so biased?

According to Wiki, a PATA hard drive is also called an IDE hard drive. Without getting heavily into detail, I will use this as an example that Wiki is not 100% right.

Got pissed when one of my specialist books noobed out and called a memory module "Memory Stick" OMG... Some of the questions are not for the UK market, and it's using American language.

Best to "research" really instead of rely on one source. I do hate it when books try to explain by using something else that has no relevance, then I get confused because it doesn't use the examples of the subject at all. Dumbing down :(

So, yeah, Wiki - not a good source of info

Well, actually, here in the states, PATA hard drives are frequently reffered to as IDE hard drives, even if it is not a fully accurate reference.

And, well, a single encyclopedia is generally not considered a good source of information. Then again, you don't want to use a single source of information, anyway. It is a good starting point, as it may start to give multiple views. I remember an article that compared the quality of the "facts" presented by Wikipedia to those of a few well-known traditional print or CD-ROM-based encyclopedias (such as Encarta or Encyclopedia Britannica), and all had similar levels of quality, Wikipedia actually covers things more in-depth, and covers more topics, and is always more up to date on rapidly changing topics.

Think of a traditional encyclopedia- typically when you look something up, you will get just a couple paragraphs of information. While, Wikipedia will typically give you a short essay on the topic. (sure, it's written in groupthink, but, so are the traditional edited encyclopedias)

I think that the problem is that lazy people use wikiepdia as their source of facts, stupid people edit it and add nonsense which can not be distingished from fact by many people, silly university students cite it without reading its own disclaimer and sometimes mean minded people choose to libel others on wikipedia.

My advice is to take what you read on wikipedia with a pinch of salt, and then to get a real life text book on the subject and read that.

Some universitys have now banned students from citing wikipedia.

Of course there's always THIS Wikipedia alternative because reality has a liberal bias:
http://www.conservapedia.com/Main_Page

It angers me to read some of their entries.

Look up Obama and you'll see what I mean.

It's just as good as any other encyclopedia, blaming it for being freely editable is just an unjustified attack, often sign of someone who is not informed enough...

I don't find the AS wikipedia article particularly biased or offensive. It sounds just like your average AS article. Not liking something does not make it biased.

This is so lame, two bad news in one, first of all Romania is back to the middle age, damn, I have friends there they should be feeling terrible for this non-sense, second, conservapedia is still as ret*d as before, bad news.

You took the words right out of my mouth

When I was in school, encyclopedias weren't allowed as sources for papers. They were a good starting point, but our research had to come from books, research papers, etc.

I find wikipedia to be an excellent source for everyday use, when I don't need to do a lot of research on an issue. I often use it to find out about words used by many of you people

BTW, is kc8ufv a ham radio call sign? ... af3s :salut:

I used to be a wikipedia editor, and I used to write on a range of topics. I would normally choose topics I know about and add text and referemces to primary and secondary sources. I noticed that people would oftein mess up good work,by adding things which they felt were more politically agreeable but less correct in terms of fact. In the end I gave up.

Honestly, I NEVER did like Wikipedia. I hated it since I first read about the environmental toxicity & technological invasion expected in 2050 A.D. I will only be 66 when that year rolls up on the Gregorian Calendar. My paternal great-grandmother died at age 96. I deserve at least that long. I won't be 96 until 2079 A.D.

I have found a few good articles, particularly about communication modes and audio/video connectors. But I WON'T create an account with Wikipedia because I can't let myself be loyal to them after they scared me so bad in September of 2006.

Even though some may be right about Wikipedia being monitored for accuracy, Mr. Clean yet the fact remain that anyone can go into it & say anything they want to say about anything...EVEN IF what they say is not true :(. I prefer Encyclopaedia Britannica cuz it's the encyclopedia my family has always trusted. My parents still have the 1990 edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica in hard copy books. I'd much rather have the current software edition cuz it's a lot cheaper. The books cost like $1,400 & the computer software costs like $40. Both contain all the same information.

Death_Of_Pathos

It's funny
the anti-intellectual attitude of conservatives is a riot.
It's like they are bragging about how stupid they are!
"I'm an idiot!" Says a conservitive!
"I'm a bigger idiot." Blurts out another.

Sheesh.

It's not a crime to be smart or to WANT to be smart.

I think Wiki should allow Asperger's and Autistic people to contribute to articles relating to that topic.

(sorry for the double post, but bad numbers, ya know :( )

Um...they *do*. That's the point of a Wiki, that anyone can edit it. Wikipedia doesn't disallow anyone from submitting because they're any sort of group--they disallow some *individuals*, but that's for things like trolling. How in the hell could they *tell* who's editing it and what if anything they have?

And whoever said that they liked Wiki before they read the AS article, you're honestly letting a single article ruin the entire site?

 Thanks for that, I will use this as my default response to the 'Aspies are more evolved' idiots. Sadly this article could have come from this forum, written by someone that truly believed it.

Wikipedia is a user created site and they would like citations for anything that is cited on its articles. If a user mentioned something in a Tony Attwood book and cite it as a source, it would been more likey to be accepted, since it is from a knowable Autism/Asperger source. If you have not read an Tony Attwood book, he put down examples of the variety (without mentioning names) of autism/aspergers in his books.
