I think I could sometimes come across as a sociopath when I'm trying to cover up my insecurities and just generally intense emotions (good ones too). But then, isn't that what a sociopath is doing? I've never really looked at the definition of a sociopath until a few minutes ago. What if I'm a sociopath and don't know it? That is mind-boggling.

IF you were a 'path, you wouldn't care, it would not bother you in the least. you'd be too preoccupied with who you were going to screw over next.

BINGO. Nail on the head.

They say something inappropriate to someone and if that person accepts it they pile on. If not, they will usually move on.
They are looking for willing victims.

With an NT, if someone says something inappropriate to them, that person is never talked to again or ignored.

What gets the socipath off and what really ruffles his feathers? Can you deprive them of some sort of emotional response when they're bullshitting you or do you just go along, and maybe even knowingly believe their BS just to get them out of your face. Am I being naive in thinking I could take one on?

My experience has taught me that sociopaths tend to rely heavily on subjective interpretation and hearsay. While sociopaths have no problem flat-out lying, doing so increases the risk that their cover will be blown thus compromising their little game therefore they will attempt to distort the truth as much as possible. They take something with only a sliver of truth and make it appear to be an objective fact. This also makes it increasingly difficult to pinpoint exact statements they make as being completely false. Further, they are masters of creating an "us versus them" mentality, usually with you as the "them" category.

Also blind nationalism or any sort of blind support makes it incredibly easy for sociopaths to work their magic, as anyone who questions them is instantly given some sort of extremely negative brand, be it "terrorist," "traitor," "coward," "racist," "socialist," "communist," "fascist," or "enemy of the people". While there are actual people that engage in terrorism and treason or are racists, these labels generally are not carefully applied but instead they are typically slapped onto people that one does not like. Sociopaths seem to be especially good at this.

This sort of blind support is usually given as the result of a need for a sense of belonging, which is a pretty common human need. However it is one thing to belong to a group that works to benefit all its members, while it is another to belong to a group that is secretly working to destroy its members.

There are two sociopaths that cause a lot of trouble in our neighborhood.

They are both a pos.

They are the dumb variety of sociopaths. They are in their 60s and scored a 0 in life and they think they are better than everyone.

Both women. Neither of whom could have biological children. One has an adopted daughter that is on public assistance because she is overweight. An adopted son
that is a homosexual. Nothing wrong with being a homosexual, but how can you possibly judge other people when your own son is gay? Not to mention, there
is no way she supported gay right before she found out her son was gay. Because it suits her, she now does.

The other woman's family can't stand her. Her son is an incompetent handyman. Her daughter is a hillbilly. Husband almost drank himself to death before he moved out.
Then he quit drinking.

Society encourages success, wealth, power etc. rather than virtue, goodness. So why blame sociopaths when the society in which they live is as bad?

My guess is that people with AS may (ironically) have better skills at spotting sociopaths/psychopaths than NT people. Such individuals tend to display remarkable ability at picking up and manipulating social cues. But since people with AS generally suck as social cues (giving and receiving), their theatrics are often wasted on us, and they come off as obviously fake. Personally, I am sometimes baffled at how oblivious many (otherwise intelligent) NT people are to the machinations of people with psychopathic tendencies.

Perhaps HR departments should be staffed with AS people to filter out applicants with psychopathic traits, instead of the current practice of staffing them with NT people to filter out applicants with AS traits?

Another reason why sociopaths/psychopaths are of interest to AS people may be because that both groups have emotional "deficits" relative to NT people. Unfortunately, SNAFU use of semantics have lead some people to believe that empathy = sympathy, and as a result, AS people must be devoid of any emotions, right? This topic has been adressed extensively on WP, so I shall not elaborate any further.

I totally agree

Oh, and avoidance seems to be the best way to deal with these people. By trying to engage, confront, persuade, accuse, threaten, placate or challenge them, we are just giving them more options for screwing us over.

I totally agree, as I learnt that one too late and to my severe detriment.

Good point. I remember watching a great documentary years ago that analyzed what personality a corporation would be, since they get the rights of a person but not the punishments of a person. The utterly cruel, ruthless, self-serving nature of a corporation would be a psycho/sociopath.
Corporate interests run verrry deep in many countries, especially the USA.

I'm so confused after reading all the comments in this thread. What exactly is a sociopath, and what's the difference between that and a psychopath?

So sociopaths are easy to spot and generally make their own life a nightmare?

I kind of knew what a psychopath was before but I was having trouble remembering. Psychopaths sound more dangerous though. I think my mother might be a psychopath. :(

the smarter ones are not easy to spot unless you are in enforced proximity with them such as being on duty in a military unit. and they are not generally in the habit of making their own lives a nightmare, only that of people under their thumbs.
