I hate living in SA...

I come from Adelaide originally but now I live in Melbourne. I can't stand Melbourne, for many reasons, and I miss Adelaide heaps. I figure Adelaide is the best place in Australia, with the possible exception of Canberra. It's a civilized place with old-world charm, not yet taken over by Mammon like everywhere else in Australia (again, except Canberra) seems to be. I know not many will agree, but that's my 10c worth.

What are your reasons for detesting Melbourne? Mammon/Ploutos/Wealth does not absolutely rule Melbourne (very influential though, but I think you will find tentacles reaching out to Arcadian Adelaide as well as to the rest of the world). "City of Churches" I have never been there, what is the architecture and the ambience like? Melbourne is not that bad a city (my home is actually rural St Andrews, whom some other Melbournian described as up near Whoop-Whoop (Australian colloquial expression for out in the Styx (latter literally a river in the underworld, but the expression is another coloqialism to convey a sense of remoteness)). Canberra may be delightfully rural for a national capital, but I hardly think you can say Mammon has no dominion there - the Federal Parliament sits there for goodness' sake; they have to take the budget into account!

Hi RedMage,
I live on the Sunshine Coast in QLD. I was 15 when we moved here and I hated it with a passion. In fact, I'd even previously refused to visit this place on day-trips from Bribie Island! That's how much I hated it.

I'm 26 now and my daughter is 6yrs old and has AS. I probably have it as well but won't be getting a dx.

Re: games...can you get on ebay? Or is it an over-18 thing? Are there people that you know in other cities that might be able to get games for you and send them?

I know it's not a brilliant solution, but it might help with a gaming obsession (I have one too! and so does my daughter).

I'd like to be able to offer suggestions for making friends...but I hated people here when I was your age. They were superficial and shallow and I didn't think they were worth my time. I was never interested in talking about boys. I liked the X-Files and knew more about paranormal activity and astronomy than anyone thought I should. I was the 'White Girl from Melbourne' (because I was so white I looked like a ghost)...I was weird and I didn't make friends easily.

Think about different ways of obtaining games...if possible. I'm sure there are people out there willing to help you get your hands on some of the games you may so desperately want (we're looking for Age of Empires of the DS...can't get it here!)

The city is cold, ugly and unfriendly in comparison with other Australian cities. The climate is pretty depressing, though I will admit it has improved in the last 10 years or so. People here are money-obsessed and unfriendly except when they are trying to get your money off you.

It's a long time since I've been back to Adelaide, and I fear it would not surprise me that the same thing is starting to happen there also. But Adelaide has a certain civiliezed character and dignity which Melbourne lacks, and a warmth in the literal and metaphorical sense which I have never found here.

Rory, I have to agree with you.
I am a Melbournite, and when I moved to QLD I was overcome and extremely annoyed by the friendliness of people here.
They would smile in the street and say goodmorning. I thought the whole world had turned upside down and gone completely mad. I wondered what had been slipped into their drinks. At least in Melbourne my friends had been akin to what I was like, even though I was 'more' so than they were.

I do love Melbourne, my entire family lives there and I miss the atmosphere and the feeling I get in the pit of my stomach and my chest when I take in the different architecture and the fenced yards, and cold unfamiliarity on the faces of the people. I miss it desperately when I'm away.

When i'm there, I miss the familiarity and openess of QLD. Sometimes I still have to do a double-check to make sure I really don't know the person who starts chatting to me in the shops like i've known them my entire life.

Each city has a distinct personality and feel to it. i love Melbourne and I love this place...I loathe Sydney. I guess we all have our prefrences :)

We (and our city) do not lack civilised dignity! I am not usually parochial or nationalistic (I realise both terms do not really apply; one a blinkered mind bound to the confines of one's parish or local area, one a similar but potentially more destructive blindness with regard to one's nation) but you have gone too far! I am not really offended. I just have not really found the capital of Victoria to be that much worse than cities generally. Admittedly, I may go to Adelaide some day and find it the New Jerusalem, but I am not sure.

I would have said the climate had been getting worse; abominable heat until recently when it has finally been milder and more Autumnal after hideous temperature and humidity...

And Melbournians are friendly - and you are just being cynical to assume that we are all only after your money. It's a mixed place, like most of the planet.

Well, I was afraid I might offend somebody, though I have no intention to do so. I'm just talking about my own experiences. Other people have had different experiences, I guess, so they form different opinions.

About the weather, well, I love the hot dry climate of Adelaide, and when I used to come to Melbourne in my twenties it was inevitably cold and grey with a depressing drizzle nearly all the time, even in summer. Now this kind of weather is less frequent - from my POV this is good!

I admit some Melbournians are friendly, but at the same time I have made very few friends here in the 15 years I have lived here, compared with other places I have lived (even Canberra which people always describe as unfriendly - I didn't find it so).

But each to his own - if you enjoy Melbourne, well, good for you!

Oi, whats that supposed to mean? I live in South Africa and don't have much of an opinion about the country. I am not an optimist (actually i'm very persimistic) but there are prons and cons to living in any country. I was not as offended as I sounded. And I am not sure I would wish to live in any city, the country (in the sense of rural areas, not nation as a whole) being preferable from at least some points of view. Universities (nearer the city) are good, and there are some other interesting buildings in parts of the city. I just resented the implication that it utterly lacked the civilisation and dignity of Adelaide. I am not implying that the latter city may be a paragon of the aforesaid virtues; I merely think it does not completely monopolise them. Apparently we both prefer the climate hitherto typical of the two state capitals (rather fortunate for us) currently in question (I prefer cold to extreme heat, though relative to many other nations cold is seldom extreme here; mild sun is nice though). We can agree to disagree as far as climate goes, I am not troubled by that issue (well I am worried by global warming, but that was not under discussion). Within Australia I have seen relatively few cities. If it comes to that I have not been to that many cities in Asia, nor have I physically been at all to Africa, Europe, or either South or North America. I am not an authority on cities. I am not offended with you. There was some humour intended in my previous post, often a mistake.

It's just not fair! Mum won't move to another town, so I have to get used to this Hell hole! But I hate this town, no one likes and I can't make friends! There's not even a support group or anything for Aspies!! !


Take her word for it everyone, it is a hell hole, pluss its full of drugs, crime, unemployment and there is gonna be a new prison put in within the next few years. trust me everyone you dont wanna mover ere.

I know quite a few white Sarth Efricans who have settled in Melbourne (mostly dutchmen types). They are sad they felt they had to leave Sarth Efrica, but did so because they felt it is not safe.

I don't hate Melbourne, myself. But have you seen news recently? Mark "Chopper" Read is offering to do tours around some of his times and crimes. (Starting at old Pentridge) Plus, most Melbournians have a wee bit of fanaticism on the ol' football, especially those from Collingwood.

I'm sorry if I offend any Melbournians (like you, Alexander) and/or AFL fans (sorry Kezzstar). But I have learned to detest AFL fans, thanks to doing data entry work on AFL-related surveys, and finding that the average IQ of the AFL fan is somewhere at room temperature. Again, apologies to any genuine AFL fans here on WP. It's just that whenever they do a survey, they never read the question properly, and put down several answers where there should be one, and sometimes, just fill out the first page of the survey so that they can get their free something-or-other....

I'd like to be able to offer suggestions for making friends...but I hated people here when I was your age. They were superficial and shallow and I didn't think they were worth my time. I was never interested in talking about boys. I liked the X-Files and knew more about paranormal activity and astronomy than anyone thought I should. I was the 'White Girl from Melbourne' (because I was so white I looked like a ghost)...I was weird and I didn't make friends easily.

Think about different ways of obtaining games...if possible. I'm sure there are people out there willing to help you get your hands on some of the games you may so desperately want (we're looking for Age of Empires of the DS...can't get it here!)

I can't get more games, it's not possible. I tried signing up for eBay for my mum, but no confirmation e-mail came, and I can't use my own for it. And the only people I know who can send me games are from England... And mum can't get more games for me either, as she refuses to get games for me.

PS: Can you guys please talk about my situation, not others?
