I am a b***h magnet.
I attract the nasty, mean, evil people to me, like I have some kind of sign on me that says "Be mean to me".
I started to explain in detail, but thought it would bore everybody. I don't know. It just seems like I get more than my share of crap from others, no matter how much I smile and try to be nice. And the people I know who are rude and narcissistic seem to get people to cowtow to them. Maybe I should just stop being so nice to everybody.
Yes, I can empathise with this. The only thing is, is it the fact that we attract the specifically nasty, mean people, or is it that people generally feel that they can be like that with us, because of our personalities?
For example, I generally get on OK with my staff at work, but if it comes to a question of doing things they don't like, they will invariably challenge my authority. This doesn't happen with other managers (like my boss is as soft as heck when it comes down to it, but I rarely see him being challenged like I am). For me, it's a constant battle to keep them in line.
Even students (I work at a university) seem to think that they can constantly undermine me. I can be as polite & helpful as anything, but I always get the back-biting and complaints, far more than my equivalent colleagues in other departments - in fact they seem to get on better by being rude and off-hand to people themselves.
Sometimes I also think I have a sign over my head saying "Soft Touch - Please Hassle"
