I finally snapped today
Maybe 33 is the magic number. My husband was 33 when we married. We have a family now. He tells me he thought he would never have that.
I think you're carrying too much weight on your shoulders all at once. As a really wise friend of mine used to say, one thing at a time, you're taking on the whole world when you only need to do what's right in front of you right now.

Tim, I never thought of you as 'future geologist.' I thought of you as really nice guy, which can't you see is more important (and more memorable) to others than geology. Really, I can't see that the topic of your studies looms that large in others.
I'm glad you're not writing from Houston. I thought of you today. A lot of people thought of you today, you're a really nice guy and we like you. We're not vested in geology ourselves. We just want you to have your druthers.
Tim, please please PLEASE stop beating yourself up. And please get some rest, you've been through the mill.
Would you give this a listen?
Tim, you have many gifts. And no one thinks anything otherwise, regardless of whether you dropped any given class. Besides, you cannot know what will happen in the future. You may excel in this field but just aren't ready yet (this does happen, I promise). Or, you have another untapped strength that you will discover. You'll be ok, regardless of which direction you go.

Tim, 8 years doesn't count for much over a lifetime. I'm 57, and if I live as long as Mom I've got another 30 years to go.
Life is what happens when you're making other plans. (John Lennon?) That one gets quoted so much because it is so true. Forgive me Tim but you're too young to know this. You're in the process of finding out.
The point is: what happens when you're making other plans? LIFE. Not the destruction of life, but the creation of one. Do you get to see where you're going? No. Discouraging, until you get used to it. You need to keep your touchstones, your talents and virtues, because they are real no matter what.
Make such undertakings as you can, when you can. Please know that life is not a series of arrivals, it's a process with milestones. Of course set a direction for yourself, but do the necessary and relax about the outcome. Adjust course when as situations arise.
Please like yourself at least as much as everybody else likes you. Please forgive yourself. Give yourself a pat on the back (yes!) for surviving. Life threw you a big curve and you dealt with it. Onward and upward. But first, lie down and sleep like a baby.
And Tim? Are you suicidal?
You must be getting very tired of me by now, sorry, really. But I have to tell you this too.
Think of sailing. In a sailboat, do we proceed in a direct line to our destination? No, we have to tack, and adjust the sail(s), and change direction because of the wind. Lots of compensating for wind, water, perils, and people. But we do arrive, don't we?
That's what life's like. Nobody achieves anything by going in a straight line. We compensate for situations that arise, and travel all kinds of directions, but we do arrive.

Tim-Tex ..... I always think of you as 'Welcome to WP!' .... the friendly guy who makes everyone feel welcome.
You have plenty of time - haven't you read that '30 is the new 20'!
I'm 33.5 but at heart I'm still about 16 years old!
Please be kind to yourself .... you are going through a huge change in your life. Bound to cause a lot of stress.
I'm thinking of you.

I am worried I might be suicidal. I don't know what to major in, I struggle in everything I do, I am constantly trying to impress others, and I am trapped in an ultra-conservative cesspool.

Tim, please keep the appointment with the school counsellor. All I can truly tell you is that you will be able to look back on this rough time and discover that it has somehow made you stronger.

Tim, why geology? You must have told us but I don't remember.
I asked my friend and she said this:
"My s-i-l was majoring in computer science and really struggling--had taken calculus 3 times, etc. I asked him, 'What do you spend your free time doing?' He spent all of it at the theater as a volunteer working on sound and lighting and building sets. 'So why are you majoring in computers?'
He thought that that was what his dad wanted him to do (I think the dad did want that initially.)
He was over 2 years into the computer program when he switched to theater. Took 3 more years to get his degree. he still had to 'pay his dues' in the industry. But was good and enthusiastic and willing to work strange hours and soon was the person they requested when they needed an extra (on lights, sound, backstage). Eventually the Opera created a position for him. He loves what he is doing. He will never make what a Microsoft employee makes. But he is happy."
Any thoughts?

I chose geology because I would be outdoors a lot. I was tired of being stuck in a cubicle all day.

Tim, I'm bloody useless at finding the right things to say to people, so please forgive my rambling efforts. All I know is that you're a friendly and welcoming guy, and anyone is lucky to have you as a friend. I am truly sorry to see that you're having such a difficult time of it at the moment. I fully empathise with you as I see myself at the same age.
At the end of the day, don't worry about what other people think about your choices at school - you have to do what you think will work best for you.
I've been in your place and I know that it feels like there's no light at the end of the tunnel. There is though - at 28 I'd scraped through university & never had a real girlfriend. Within 12 months I ran into someone & got married. Now 12 years later, I'm still married, I have a decent job & 2 kids.
All I want to say is that it's not hopeless - keep on going and life will change for the best when you least expect it.
Claradoon put it well:
