I have Aspergers, as some of you probably already know, and I also have OCD-like traits too. My OCD has been pretty much non existant since my childhood, but it's come back big time this year.

I'm having these silly urges to do things that have unexpected outcomes, the biggest, and worst one is wanting to experiment with and change settings on my computer, click things that I'm not sure of etc. This would be fine if I had another computer that my partner (who's been driven nuts by me constantly telling him about these things) didn't use as well. If this one gets messed up, then he'll not be able to use it for the things he needs it for too.

I tried to buy a cheap computer off ebay for this, as I'm pretty up on computers and would like to teach myself more stuff without risking the home PC, which is a good idea in theory. However we're not made of money, and with Christmas coming up etc, I don't have the spare cash at the moment for this. I couldn't find one I wanted with a poxy £20.

It's come to the point now where I can't come on here most of the time, which leaves me wondering about going mad from the THOUGHT of coming on here instead. I hope some of this makes sense =/

It's like everything I'm not sure of is one big red button. I can't sleep at night sometimes because it's like having a ticking bomb in my chest. I've resorted to writing a list of dates, based on 7 day weeks, in my journal, and if I can go between those dates without so much as clicking anything on the computer, I can get myself a reward like some socks or some earings or whatever.

Stupid and childish I know, but I'm not equipped to deal with this problem on my own, the last time it was this bad I was a kid living at home, and people did everything they could to help me. Now I have nothing, my partner is out of his depth with it, I don't know what to do.

If anyone has any helpful tips or ideas on how to avoid carrying out these actions and be able to live peacefully without all the angst keeping from doing them causes, I'd be very grateful.

OCD's just like a hiccup. It's a compulsion, an instinct, almost a reflex.

The more ya supress it, the stronger it gets.

So, either you expend your entire energy reserve on this...

Or... Well I don't know SPECIFICALLY but I suspect that you can "drink a glass of water" so to speak.

Find something else to hyperfocus on. For instance I've been playing MMO games and the challenge of squeezing the absolute perfect best out of my character is not only a very complex, fun thing to do, but it also allows me to improve in other areas I like, such as lopping off the heads of other players with ease.

Find something you like that requires a lot of effort, and fuss over it.

Normal people do it too. It's called a hobby :P

(Seriously, this is amateur advice, and I have VERY mild OCD mostly caused by the need to contain the sheer of mount of "motion" my mind generates and my constant sensitive itchyness)

Well if I can get into something, then yes, it works just as you say. I have one idea that I will write everything in my diary, everything that I want to do (messing with the computer, right down to stupid things), it won't hurt on paper will it, not like actualy doing the action 'just to see what happens', which could lead to us having to fork out money we don't have to get things fixed.

Another idea is everytime I get the urge to do it, I'll put it into a piece of artwork, because I like drawing. Again, it's a release that doesn't involve the ultimate action, which is what I'm looking for.

If you tinker with computer another good idea is to write down what is changed if you are new to doing it and how it was changed. Cuz sometimes tinkering with PC can lead to problems. That you might not remember how they got started. :)

You can also create separate profiles for your computer as well each with their own settings so you can have your own desktop and your partner can have their own desktop as well like if you want different picture in background and different mouse speed and other little things like that. Creating separate profiles is rather simple and can be done easily with Windows. I believe that is how it works. There are numerous programs that can assist with this as well. I forgot them though, but they are out there. Some programs can lock your computer so if you delete Windows and restart computer Windows will still be there. :)
