Today i confirmed my fears. After months of getting lost in the details (i swear i cannot help it, if you know what weak central coherence is) and after all the mistakes i have made, my research advisor has let me know in a very kind way that he doesn't want to work with me anymore.

I recognize they have been patient with me, it is true. They have waited for the results and they have given me support.

But i also recognize that i cannot help been distracted easily by ANYTHING. I also know that i cannot help getting lost in the details and trying to delve deeper and deeper into something. I do this so much that i always miss the the goal. One more thing is that when i face a problem with 3 variables and 2 possible outcomes, i see 12 variables and a thousand possibilities, often leading me to confusion. I know these are not cheap excuses, but the plain truth.

One thing is for sure, it seems that the only way i will get a Phd is by working with another autistic person, someone who know hows i feel and how i think.

Sorry if this post is too long but i need to tell you how bad i feel right now. I promise you i will keep studying at my own pace and when i have good results i will publish them. Thanks for reading. With sadness,

Geom

That sounds like adhd. There are pills for that. If I'd gotten pills sooner I'd be in research. Without them all I could manage was a bs

Hugs or Rubits Cube if you prefer.

you know maybe it is for the best, i know several people that regretted getting a phd. reasons are that it is harder to get a job, there is not much of a pay difference considering giving 5 years of life (ms pays off the best). if research is such a torture for you, than it would be worse to somehow get a phd and than be stuck with research for the rest of your life.
i always say to myself to give it a try and if doesn't work than it is probably for the best.

ps: even an autistic boss would need results however sometimes it takes a long time. i got my first paper in my 3rd year and know people that didn't have anything till year 5.

I'm sorry that it had to turn out that way.

Believe me, I know the feeling. There were times when working on my Master's felt exactly the same. Staying focused on my original idea was not easy--I kept seeing more avenues just begging to be explored.

I think that makes sense. If you absolutely cannot "tighten up" just one topic (as my advisor put it) then explore them all. You may eventually zero in on one that, to you, warrants more attention than the others. Perhaps then you can return to the program and get your degree. IMO, it's never too late to finish.

Good luck, sorry you're going through this, hope you feel better.

Thank you for your kind words, i know you believe me.

It's a shame these things happen to a minority of the population, i mean, it is hard to believe that you cannot get ahead because maybe you are too smart, and not the opposite.
