I spent 3 hours today in the rain in town trying to find something for my mums birthday today and I got her a jewelery box that has a musical ballerina on it and when I gave it to her she said to me why did u buy me a jewelery box? Then after banging it about a bit said what do I need a jewelery box for? I've got no f**kin jewelery , i never know what to get her cos she doesn't want chocolate or flowers or perfume won't let me buy clothes foher cos I have a bad fashion sense apparently and can't get her shoes cos she has to buy her own and she won't were any jewelry I have bought her at all I don't know why I bother and it hurts a bit when I get her something and she never likes it and has never ever says thank u

You shouldn't bother. Your mum sounds like a total b***h.

I'm very sorry to hear that, that is unacceptable imo :(

The musical ballerina sounds like a very nice present to receive on its own, though i personally wouldn't have needed the box either (mainly as im a guy and don't wear/receive any jewellery :D), though i still, and she should have at least appreciated the effort.

Have you asked what she does like?

I wouldn't blame you if you didn't want to though! Also did she, or does she ever apologise after getting angry with you, when you do/did something "wrong"? - Just trying to understand whether it was a temporary emotional lash out or not

Also do you know what other people got her for her birthday, and if she did/does the same sort of thing to others?

Also could there be any other reason underneath that could have wanted her to lash out and she sort of used the present as an excuse?

Sorry for all the questions, i should really cut down on it :( so you dont need to answer any of them if you dont want to.

My mother-in-law is often the same way, and I tell my wife to just do whatever she (my wife) thinks best and to do so without expectation. "Easy to please but impossible to satisfy" fits some people, but others will just never be pleased at all ... and that is *not* your fault!

i do ask her what she would like and she says she doesnt know and thats al the answer i get really , she never apologises even if shes been proven wrong she still insists that she is right. and i hadnt done anything wrong i rarly do anything and when i do do something like clean up the whole house she comes in and says you missed a bit , there wasnt a reason as far as i can see for her to lash out at me , and i dont mind the questions  i ask a lot of questions too :)

feels like my fault because no matter what i do its never good enough so i stopped trying but i cant exactly not get her a birthday present, i feel so stupid when she just looks at me and i kinda know shes thinking 'what is this' with an almost disgusted look about her as if ive just gave her a pigs head on a plate or something

Anyone who has the gall to swear to your face, like that, is not worth being bothered with.

No one has to put jewelry in a jewelry box-- it can be used for anything that will fit.

I wouldn't bother getting her any gifts-- unless she specifically asks for what she wants.
