Had to put my dog down today

We'd had her for 14 years and she had 2 types of malignant tumour. she had several surgeries to try to get rid of it but it just kept coming back. Hubby and I decided to keep her going as long as she was happy otherwise healthy and able to get about. In the last couple of weeks she got steadily worse, and in the last few days could not keep food down or in, and was having trouble walking, so considering she had little quality of life, we did what we thought was best for her.

Even the vet said he was the toughest little dog he'd seen.

I feel sad for you, I hope that your dog is in a better place now. I also have a dog which I love very much. I am sure that you took good care of your dog and gave her a good loving home.

Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.

It sounds like you did everything you could as soon as you could, and when it was time you took the most selfless and courageous step. Your dog was as lucky to have you as you were to have him.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss and I know how it can hurt to lose a dog, but I think you did all you could to help your dog to have a good life. My family once made the mistake of keeping a dog alive too long, hoping that against all odds he would recover, but he didn't and I hope that I will never have to witness such unnesseccary suffering again. Sad as the situation may be at the moment, I think you did the right thing and saved your dog avoidable pain that would have served no purpose.

It's painful to loose a friend. I hope you'll be able to focus on the happy memories sooner than later.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss. I'm in a similar situation currently. My 17 yo cat has had several strokes in the last few days and is deteriorating, but still has much energy, so I'm not sure whether to put her down or simply force-feed her (she stopped eating). I'm giving her at least one more day before I decide...

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you heal from this loss. I truly hope there is a heaven so your great friend is in a better place. I can't relate to how you're feeling, but I'll do my best to pray for your dog.

opal, i am very sorry for your loss. we know you loved your dog very much. my dog is 15 or so and has been with me for 11 years. had two strokes but is doing really great now. i treasure every day we have together.

I'm so sorry. Pets can be as hard to grieve for as our human relations. Sometimes even harder.

It's such a difficult decision to make,but you did the right thing.

I had to put my dog down a couple of years ago. He was a wonderful companion - fearless, loyal, and always up for an adventure, but his heart just gave out at thirteen years old.

He never cared that I was a socially awkward, undesirable, sub-human, mutant. I held him in my arms as the vet administered the drug that stopped his failing heart. And I'm not ashamed to say that I went home and wept myself to sleep that night.........

For all of you that are dealing with loss in your lives - I'm just so sorry.

Opal and Dryad, I am sorry for both of your losses.

Almost 5 years ago (June 29th, 2006) I had to put my cat to sleep. He had developed a large intestinal tumor that was inoperable, so we had to put him to sleep. He was almost 16, and he is the only creature that I could honestly say that of when he died, a part of me died with him.

I think with all of us who have cared for a pet, that the end is truely the hardest part of being a pet owner.
