Anyone relate to family trouble?
I'm having a lot of trouble being around my family right now, especially my mother. I'm stuck back here with them at the moment due to financial/work problems, and am trying my best to get out, but in the meantime it's driving me nuts.
I suspect the need to have your own space is an aspie thing - I come "home" here, and it seems to me as if my mother's influence is overbearing. She takes over the whole house, and I'm stuck in the attic room trying to get away from her.
Of all my family, she is the one with the biggest problem with me. She hates the aspie traits and frequently tells me I'm a "robot" and blames me for all her problems in life. She's constantly trying to pick a brawl with me, just to get some kind of response and force me to "share" even if that means screaming at her, which makes me extremely uncomfortable. I'd much rather just be left alone and completely ignored. She is also massively transphobic and I'm genderqueer. I'm also a very private person and she is insanely intrusive and refuses to get out of my business or give me any peace at all. I barely talk, and she never stops, expecting me to talk back and gets snarky when I don't. She is an alcoholic who is always drunk and trying to make me drink, and recently has been angling to get me to take drugs.
I really am trying to get away from her, but everything she does annoys the living hell out of or disgusts me. I don't think there is one things I like about the woman, and she's my own mother! I don't even know if the concept of "family" means anything to me. All I can think to do about it is get back on my feet with work/finances, move out again and just never see her again. Which is awkward, as I get on really well with my father.
How does everyone else relate to their families? Well or badly? Why?
I have little to no use for my family at this point and my life has gotten easier since my mother died. You're living with them so you have to deal with them. There'll be no way to change them. I recommend seeing a counselor for ideas on how to ignore them or confront them productively but abusive people don't fight fair and aren't interested in productive resolution, so maybe just seeing a counselor to have someone normal to sort it out might help. I'm sorry you're going through this. Mothers are supposed to be motherly. I have no idea why so many aren't. My only consolation is that I've got four kids who, when they're adults, won't be writing a post like you just did. That's about all I can do. ![]()
I relate pretty much the same as you. I've worked out my parent's schedule and, as much as possible, avoid them and all family members. I find myself cooking dinner after midnight so the kitchen is empty. Lately my mother has taken to coming in to see what I'm doing, at 1am, at 4am, at dawn. I'm never alone. And since I'm with my family, I'm never, ever safe.
And when I'm with them, I have to do what they say when they say and I get so angry. Family are Hell.
My situation is very similar to yours. My mom does not know about my diagnosis because I think she will try to "fix" me in her own way. Long story short, I'm not sure I want to be "fixed" by her. I consider myself asexual, but sometimes I feel like a gay kid stuck in the closet. She is always lecturing me about how I'm selfish and mean. I never did anything to her; my only offense has always been to shut the door to my room and not talk to anyone. She does not understand how to leave me to my peace.
The only solution I see for both of us is to just get out our respective houses ASAP.
