Do you think the current problems are due to childhood abuse?

In my case yes since i was severely abused, also genetically predisposed since my parents have psychological problems.

I feel my AS as risen due to abuse.

Anyone else feels same way

I think it has to do with just genetics. I had my butt smacked and face slapped quite a bit as a child but I have a high pain threshold so it really did not hurt that bad. My firend that I have that has HFA his parents only used timeouts never laying a hand on him in anyway. Both of us one born to parents who spanked and one who didn't yet both of us are still autistic.

Yes, I think my abuse has had a major effect with AS and has/will effect diagnosis.

My father was overprotective so I wasn't allowed to play with other kids, when my parents divorced my mother became overprotective herself as she knew I was different to other kids, this meant she did my talking for me so I wasn't able to adjust and make-up for my lack of social interaction when I was younger, so making my social problems worse. My mother then became abusive physically and mentally, also telling family and friends I was a horrible kid, so I was cut-off from those outside the home and had to just shut-up and put up with what she was doing to me. There was also sexual abuse from a neighbour.

The things with my parents without a doubt had a major effect on my social skills - so when I went into therapy from the ages of 12 to 15 as I was unable to speak to the therapists they had to assume the abuse was to blame - so despite them thinking it was asperger's they instead went the route of social anxiety, I left therapy as it wasn't helping and so I didn't get a diagnosis and got no support.

I'm worried as hell that as an adult going for an AS diagnosis that they'll try to put the blame on the abuse again...I know the abuse had an effect, but it is without a doubt not the cause of the problems I face.

I think that type of abuse can make it worse.. I doubt it can cause symptoms of aspergers tho.

It probably can add to additional feelings of worthlessness and distrust/fear of people. (Speaking from experience)

I think AS has an effect on how you perceive the abuse, and how you recover from it, rather than abuse causing AS.

I'd agree with this too - you may not understand it's abuse (I didn't see the sexual abuse for what it was), and I've always said that being AS helped me deal with it a lot better than what many NT's would.

Because my parents didn't abuse me, my AS is all but gone. I firmly believe that if they did abuse me, it would have gotten much worse.

No one ever abused me in any way (if you don't count bullying from other kids). I'm sure abuse compounds any problems you may already have though.

If it's true that your personality is reinforced when things don't go your way, then the rich get richer in hostile environments, and the poor get poorer. By the time my parents became hostile, I had transformed from a shy, trembling naive kid to a hardened social scientist. So that part of me got reinforced, and just like in Pokemon, a Blastoise at Level 100 is better if you took your time with leveling up instead of stuffing his ass full of Rare Candies.

I've grown up being abused and I'm f****d up in many ways I can't even put a finger on so yeah I think a lot of my problems are due to that.

Ok so AS is not related to abuse
But i think my symptoms are due to child abuse and probably its not AS
But i do have symptoms of AS
So its confusing for me

when i read what you have written i feel its written by me. My parents were also very overprotective and my mom would talk on my behalf. Till the time i was 15 i was selectively mute due to the abuse. In college i started talking little bit. My parents were also telling family and friends how horrible i am. Even now none of my uncles and aunts are in touch with me because of my mom's poisoning. My uncle molested me and to this my mom replied that he did not climb on top of you and sleep so just shut up. This is so similar i know what you must be going through each waking day would be nightmare.

My theraphy helped me to gain confidence and break away from my mom and brother who were torturing me. I really dont know what is causing AS symptoms but i guess it developed due to beatings on my head by my father.

When you see a ASD specialist, they can rule out things and decide if you have AS or not.

I do believe abuse can make autistic people worse. But abuse makes any person worse, NTs too. But I think abused children still learn cues and other things, they don't get resistant to change or get hypersenitivty but I do believe they develop high pain tolerance because they get used to it. Dave Pelzer (ever read Child called It?), he developed high pain threshold because his mother always beat him so he got used to the pain and it didn't hurt as much. Abused children can still develop friendships but in David's case he lost friends because he stole food for survival and he wasn't allowed to take baths and wear clean clothes so he was smelly and kids just didn't want to be around him nor be his friend. His former friends left him.

In Genie's case, she will never recover from the abuse and will always be developmental disabled because she was kept in the basement of their house by her father so she never developed any skills and to develop those skills, you need to be around people and her father kept her away from the world. She was a feral child and her mind was passed the development stage for her to learn skills to be independent. She was getting help after the death of her father but her mother cut everyone off and the help she was getting.

Right i developed high pain tolerance and im emotionally numb. I was unable to make friends because i was almost mute and wont talk. And later exhibited whole loads of behaviour problems.

If your AS symptoms came later in life, they could be from abuse you got.

Genie:

I guess her father didn't die and that was only in the movie they made based on her case.
