Ok so I have come to the conclusion that there is no way I can just hope to pass as normal enough and actually expect it to work out....whether its for a job, actually getting a degree or anything in life. So maybe in my case getting officially diagnosed with AS and PTSD and Major Depression(I know I was diagnosed with depression when I was 15 but I think they just thought it was situational depression). would be better? but I don't know......I don't even know how to get that without just letting things get worse until I need immediate psychological help. I tried applying for disability but that did not work because I don't really have any offical diagnoses which is why I was trying to apply for that in the first place so I could maybe afford that.

Also though I don't know what an official diagnoses would do......or even if that would help. So if anyone knows how to get officially diagnosed when you can't afford or what a diagnoses would even do let me know.

Hello Sweetleaf,

It took me a very long time to realise that I could not pass as normal, may be it can be a positive for you to have realised this? I think your conclusion that things will never 'work out' for you is incorrect, and I hope you prove yourself wrong.

Being diagnosed as having AS in the UK means that I may learn some of what I might be able to do in order to ameliorate my problems by researching AS online, and in available books on the subject, and attending self-help groups. If I go to a doctor suffering from depression, I imagine that I am treated similarly to any other person. What I am trying to emphasise is the necessity of taking responsibility for my self, because being diagnosed does nothing at all.

I am expected to make attempts to find employment and educate myself as necessary, both of these are things that I would like to achieve anyway, I have held a job before though not now, and learning I particularly enjoy. One of my friends has been diagnosed with Bipolar I, has suffered major psychotic episodes, and has been repeatedly detained in hospital under the mental health act, to protect himself and others, for long periods( more than three years, in total). Still, when released he is expected to work towards education and employment, in fact he is employed now.

I hope you do not mean this, but I understand that when a person is struggling with some problems it can be difficult to find a solution. I am sorry that you feel bad, Sweetleaf. I think you do not value yourself highly enough. Is there anything positive you can do to help yourself feel better?

So if I understand that correctly in your case having a diagnoses means people still expect you to recover, or get better or whatever.....I feel like I am kind of beyond that point, but also know without a diagnoses, maybe its different here(U.S) but in order to possibly get on SSI disability one has to have a diagnoses or there is really no sense in bothering. And even then I am not sure how heavily its regulated and if I would still be able to do what I choose instead of be required to you know try prescriptions and such I really don't want any of their medications I would prefer to keep what is left of me intact.

Yeah I just don't really know what is the best thing to do I guess.
