My family has traveled from our home in Connecticut to Georgia to see the college my brother is going too, and my dad has been making the trip pure hell the entire time. He talks constantly, bosses everyone around, gets on everyone's nerve, and guilt trips people constantly. The trip is to get my brother prepared for when he leaves for college in a few weeks, and were going to be there for four days, and my dad has driven everyone up the wall. He screams and cusses at people, especially my mom when she is driving, talking too her like she is a 2 year old. He constantly guilt trips me about my past failures, and there is no way for me to avoid it. He is a know-it-all,has to be right about everything, and gets angry when you criticise him.

Does anybody have any advice on how to deal with an abusive dad? Only serious advice will be appreciated.

Did your dad go to college? Maybe the trip is stoking his insecurities and he's overcompensating by being a know-it-all. and such.

When he's yelling at your mom about her driving someone should pipe in with if he's such a good driver, than he should do it all by himself... when he drives too long and nearly or does crash the car he may hopefully learn to cool it.

The only way to deal with people like that is to let them think they are in control. Not only will you have a wee bit of freedom, but they will never see it coming when you want something for yourself. I can't tell you how it will look, because I know nothing of your situation, but what I do know is that people like that aren't as powerful as they appear to be. The less control you give them, the less control they have. Sure, it sounds like he has a lot of control by default, but unless you have a fallback of some degree or another, he will walk all over you because he thinks he can. The worst thing to do is to fight with someone like that. You will always lose because you actually care about the result.

Yes. Leave the house. Get your own place...maybe with enough room for your mom, and if you so desire, call him up someday and tell him what an abusive jerk he is.
