I don't get it. Crying just makes me feel worse, like I'm so worthless that I can't even keep ahold of my emotions. And then it just seems like everything gets so much worse after I cry.
I'm trying to ask this one as a general question on why people say crying helps, not about why I'm crying myself. I just made a separate board for that.

It does help a lot of people, as it helps release bottled-up, repressed feelings, and it helps them let go of their sadness and move on with their lives. Not necessarily true for everyone, obviously, but that's how it is in my own experiences.

It helps me to release pent up feelings and emotions.

I've found most people feel better after losing control of their emotions. I suppose sometimes this is the case for me, but overall I prefer to keep that control.

Of course, if I don't know why I'm crying I feel even worse than when I do know the reason.

I'm a bit like you, OP. I cry when I can't keep from it anymore. I can count on two hands the number of times I've cried from anything but pure frustration. Usually because a situation has gotten out of hand and all my attempts to get it back to logic and calm are being utterly rejected.

Crying is a release, but it can be overdone. People that hold in their emotions tend not to cry, people that cry too much tend to be over emotional.

It releases the bad emotions so, when you're done crying, you should feel better. This obviously isn't true for every single person though.

It helps some people to just "get it all out".

I rarely cry. I've cried maybe three times in the past ten years and it's got to be something really bad for that to happen. Sometimes I wish I could cry but I rarely can.

One of my kids friends got killed in a car wreck a year or so ago and even at his funeral I couldn't cry. I was very sad, and that was obvious, I do show emotion, but I just couldn't cry.

Crying in circumstances where most people would cry, ie; funerals, finding out horrible news, a bad break up, very sad movies even, doesn't bother me when I see it. I cannot stand to see people cry over small things though. It irritates me to no end, and I don't know why.

It can be helpful, but for me it has to be a rather extreme instance of crying.

Pardon the graphic simile, but it's like vomiting violently with food poisoning: it may be horrible to go through, but sometimes you need to get that toxic material out.

Every once in a while, I'll "feel" better, but it never lasts, so I wonder if it's a hormonal thing instead of an emotional thing that makes you feel better after crying.
