My husband of 25 years who I have complained to for years and years for not providing emotional support just tried to give that to me. Finally. Apparantly it was very difficult for him.

It went like this.

Me, sitting by him on the couch and putting my face in his chest : "I'm so depressed"

Him ; purposefully turning House off and looking at me and then saying in almost a freaking monotone "I'm sorry you're depressed, why are you depressed, theres no reason for you to be depressed, you're pretty. Is there any Ro-Tel dip left?"

I actually forgot about my depression for a second and said WTF???? I even SAID WTF to him? He said "I'm giving emotional support, like you said to!" I told him you look here, thats horrible and I want to go back to not getting anything on that level!

It may be likely that he simply does not understand what you mean by "Emotional support".

Do you want him to act like a character from a daytime soap opera?

Do you want him to act the same way that your friends claim that their husbands act?

Do you want him to act the same way that your female friends act?

Do you want him to act like you do?

:?

In Scotland, emotions didn't really exist until American T V shows started telling us about them. I'm not always sure that we're better off now. At least before, we didn't know we were missing anything.

What is Ro Tel dip?

Do you feel better now?

Edited to add: actually, we did do emotions before, but the kind that would get you in jail or hospital.

Well at least he tried. Did he do good or a horrible job?

It seems like he is genuinely trying to me. That is a good sign! :)

He turned off House to communicate with you. That sounds like a good sign.

Yeah, what's Ro Tel dip?

I think it's because she felt like he had all the emotional warmth of a hard park bench.

To be honest, this is probably exactly what I'd do. Thus why I don't even bother finding a girlfriend. If that helps any.

He tried which was probably a big step for him, but it seems it wasn't good enough. With all the things going on in your life, it should be easy for him to know what you're depressed about. You have a lot on your plate with the family stuff that you're dealing with. If you need emotional support, you can always come to us. Hugs.Image

I did read it but I don't know if he did good or not. I am not sure what the wink is supposed to indicate. That you were joking or hinting I was too aspie to understand if the emotional support was good or not.

OliveOilMom, I just read some of your other posts in the haven, and I apologise for being flippant earlier.

Your husband's the man he's been for the past 25 years and longer, so I do suppose that for him to turn off the TV and give you his attention, however clumsily, is symbolic of some deeper emotional awareness and care for you.

For those of you wondering, Ro-Tel dip is usually a spicy cheese-based dip eaten with corn chips in the states...well, at least the states in which I have lived.

If I am incorrect, someone please correct me. Thx!

Honey, he tried which is a good thing.

Personally, I am a lot like your husband when it comes to emotional support. I'll listen, I'll give advice if I have any, I'll even hug depending on the situation but actually supporting someone emotionally is foreign to me. I'd need a guidebook and possibly a flow chart to get it even in the ballpark of acceptability.
