It's an invasion of privacy. If it's rude to ask someone how much money they have, then it's rude to look at another person's checkbook. My money is none of her business. My mom is making it harder for me to trust her.

That does happen. Have you considered using a Credit/Debit Card where you are the only one with access to the records?

It's much more rude to deliberately invade someone's privacy than it is to ask them how much money they have, as they have deliberately gone behind your back to obtain information that they have no right to.

Yeah, my mom does that too, which is why i never bring check books with me when I visit her. She also likes to go through my backpack to make sure everything is neat or interrupt whatever I am doing to make me go through my own things and clean them up. I hate how she treats me like a little kid whenever I visit her.

I do have a debit card. The checkbook is needed for the records.

Boo! That stinks! It gives me a creepy feeling just thinking about the invasion of privacy. Sorry this happened to you

Does the money come from your parents? If so, they have the right to snoop into your check book. Also, even if the money is yours, if they are paying for your car or college bills, they have some right to know how you are spending your money while they are supporting you, as you shouldn't be living it up while they go through financial hardships to help you out.

If they are not supporting you, and the money is yours, you should buy a fire proof metal security box, with a lock, and keep any private papers, including your check book in there. Also, it is not a good idea to carry your check book around with you. If someone were to steal your wallet/purse, they would be able to use your checks. Only carry your check book when you know you will need to use it away from home. The rest of the time use cash or a debit or credit card.

Bear in mind, if you are still living with your parents, they may object to your having a locked security box that they can't get into. This is because young people sometimes get into drugs, illicit sex, gambling, and other bad things, and parents have a responsibility to try to keep that from happening. And, if it does happen, they have to try to save their child from the child's own bad choices. To do this, parents need to know what's going on, including whether there are any drugs, birth control pills, or other things in the child's possession. That means no locked hiding places that the parents can't get into.

If you are still living at home and want more privacy, you will have to find a way to move out.

If you're having trouble trusting her, it may be time to move out. If you do move out and get a room mate, you will need to lock up your checkbook anyways.

Also, did she laugh when she saw the amount?

The money is mine and not from my parents. I'm guessing you believe that parents also have the right to read their child's diary?

I think she's busted your bubble of privacy and security man! :( not cool dude!! ! I think it's time for you book it OUT OF THAT HOUSE. Every single human deserves his or her own level of privacy! And since the money is YOURS, your mother has NO RIGHT to go snooping around in your personal belongings! I bet YOU don't go snooping around in her bra and underwear shelf, or her wallet or important documents!! ! When you can't even trust your own mother, o think that a neon sign flashing GET OUTA THERE!! !
