So I want to try and schedule an appointment to get some sort of help with my psychological issues, but how am I supposed to even call anywhere to make an appointment? I can't seem to bring myself to do so, either my general anxiety of phones kicks in, ever since I can remember answering phones or calling people on them makes me anxious I mean what the hell is the purpose of being afraid to talk on the phone? But anyways that interferes and then I am paranoid about going for help and getting sent to a psych ward or something...and having a totally negative experience that just makes me worse.

Then I have my mom wanting me to schedule a general physical check up...and it's hard enough trying to do what I had already planned...let alone that, because then I have to worry about getting set off and freaking out there and no one there knowing how to deal with it. So I just really don't even know what to do. I also get worried that I'll get kicked out for not being home enough or if my mom decides I am not doing enough to live there or whatever. I mean can I fail at life anymore?

And my symptoms certainly aren't improving....no I don't like to feel on edge all the time, and the physical symptoms of the PTSD really, really suck and draw un-needed attention to me. I mean It's a bit abnormal when someone quickly pays for their crap trying to keep their hands steady and practically runs out of the store practically running into the next person coming in through the door in an attempt to 'get the hell out of there.' and the only real reason I freaked out was there was annoying music playing kinda loud and of all things it was skipping and I was trying to decide what to get and it just really sucked. And I am still on edge over that even though it was yesterday.

I remember learning about PTSD in highschool, never thought I'd actually have to live it. And to think I always wanted something 'exciting' to happen...well it did and I didn't like it so much.

A psych doc may be able to help you with calming meds, so you should try to see one.

I want to, but I can't even make a freaking phone call.....because I get too anxious, so I don't see how I'll schedule an appointment unless I can somehow keep the anxiety from getting in the way.

yeah that is how much I suck.

It may be possible in your area that there are doctors that you can schedule by email, there are in mine

Okay here's what you do if you're really freaked out about talking on the phone. I do this all the time when I'm not sure how to go about a conversation. You basically rehearse it. Just write down something like "Hello, my name is ________ and I'm wondering if I can book an appointment ______________ etc. Make sure you have multiple choice answers like a plan b just in case, so the conversation is flexible and you have answers to what she says. Make sure you write down all of the questions you want to ask. Once you start talking, you usually become more relaxed about the whole phone thing. Don't worry about what kind of things you say or how you say it because they deal with patients that have issues like this everyday. Just make sure you sound clear, loud enough and friendly. You have to just force yourself to make the call, remember that's the first step and once you get that first step done you've accomplished something big.

Also, I'm going to add this. The first time I went to the doctor for medication the doctor asked me if I wanted to go to the social worker's office or if I was too nervous then she'd book an appointment with a social worker to actually meet me at home and talk to me there. You might have that option as well if you care to ask about it.

I agree, the rehearsing and writing down "multiple choice" answers to possible questions helps a lot. The conversation will be over before you know it (assuming they don't put you on hold for a moment), but that might be helpful if you need to re-gather your thoughts. I'm having trouble working up the desire to book an appointment with a therapist, even though I know how badly I need the help. I haven't even gotten to the "how" part; just the thought of it makes me think "I'll deal with that later". But later never comes...

The only issue with that is then I would probably get confused, when the responses on the other end do not match up to what I pre-planned. Not a bad idea though. But yeah its not so much being nervous about what to say, its just general anxiety associated with making a phone calls in general that I've had since I was a kid. I'll probably write down questions I want to ask though so I don't forget. I am alright with sounding clear and loud enough, don't really know how 'friendly' I sound though probably not very especially with my current mental state.

But yeah I usually do just try forcing myself.......but then if I get too anxious when I go to call I can't make the call, and I don't mind talking to them elsewhere so I don't need to have anyone meet me at home, don't even know if they have such options especially when I'm limited to the free/cheap places for people with no income. It would just be nice not to have a totally irrational anxiety related to phones. Thanks though.

It wouldn't hurt to look into it.

Great the only place I know of where I may be able to get some sort of diagnoses or whatever is like an hour away on the bus in an unfamiliar area. So I want to find something closer......and apparently I am too stupid to even know what I'd type into google to find a psychologist, psychiatrist or some mental health center with people with qualifications to diagnose and possibly prescribe things to help my freaking anxiety in my area.

I mean I don't know that else to type in other then mental health services and the area I live in.......but all I can find is freaking counseling. And having someone to tell me it will all be ok is not exactly what I am looking for right now. It's just completely hopeless, I don't even care if they put me in a psych ward anymore because that might be the only way I can get some sort of help, the hospital bill might suck though and I'm already in debt so hard to say if that would help or hurt more.

I've been avoiding talking to my mom and some other family because I just don't want to have the 'so I'm a bit mental, and since I have PTSD and it was untreated for 6 years it's bound to get worse...so uhh actually I am not going back to college, am not thinking of enrolling in a technical school and am not actually looking for part time/seasonal work because I can't function well enough......to even go to a conveniance store for 5 minutes apparently.' conversation with them.

I don't know anyone has anything to say to this, but I needed to vent a little....time for my pity party I guess, I even have cake :| anyone want some?

Sweetleaf, you sound pretty frustrated. I'm sorry that your having a hard time. :(

Cake is my favorite, especially for emotional comfort. At my last job I used to get teased as the cake-eater whenever someone brought a cake to work (often because the office housed about a hundred or two people). I tried to go along with it but the teasing kept going even when I got my eating problem mostly under control (I looked like I had a healthy weight the whole time) so I had to deal with THAT reminder. O, if they only knew...

I'm in a similar boat- I have no idea how to find a mental health center for myself. I want to find one with someone who actually deals with people with Asperger's in order to get diagnosed correctly. It's all going to have to be out-of-pocket unfortunately, too, so price is an issue. I wish all of this mental health help was less expensive and more easily accessible. There's such stigma surrounding "mental" problems that demand for services isn't as high as I think it could be.

I just had the thought to look it up in the phone book since the Internet isn't being very helpful. I'm going to go do track down the phone book (still outside from when they dropped it off a few months ago), and then maybe get some cake for lunch...

If you go to a walk-in clinic they can refer you to mental health services according to your needs and price range. I'd love some cake right now. It would be cool if we could all sit together in one big group and eat cake and talk about our problems. That would probably be the best therapy because we'd be around people with similar problems.

I really struggle with phone calls too, and when I feel bad they get even harder to make. Anything that HAS to be done by phone I ask either a friend or my husband to do it for me. I'll email the place if I can, or walk there and make an appointment in person (which I find difficult but not as difficult as the phone) or, if neither of these seems possible I write an actual old-fashioned letter and post it. On the rare occasion I make a phone call, I do the script thing.

I hope you find the strength to contact the clinic in one way or another.

Alright so I did find something closer, not sure if they can help much but....I know where it is and could call and make an appointment or I can maybe just go in and make one since its not too terribly far from my moms house. So I guess I'll try and do that.

thanks to everyone who responded...that helped me calm down about it some and I have a better idea of what to do.

Having similar problems myself ... my solution is simply to procrastinate

Seriously though, I'm giving myself time to prepare for the conversation. I need to buffer a bit to do anything socially, and this is really intense stuff, so it will take a few months.

I've been procrastinating...but I'll try and schedule something today, though.

Other that I am a little stressed about having to tell my mom and other family members what's actually going on. I mean they hope I am looking for work, planning to go to a technical school or back to college. I am actually wanting to address psychological issues and apply for SSI. Not very impressive so not quite sure how they'll react to that, and if they have an issue with it well I guess I'll stop having anything to do with them as much as I can.
