My mom is punishing me for stimming, threatening to not give me anymore money when I'm a poor grad student with one infrequent part-time minimum wage job.

I've had a habit of jumping on my bed. Not standing, just sitting, listening to my iPod. It feels really good, and is my favorite way to stim and release pent up energy and excitement. My mother doesn't like it because I broke two metal bed frames that were springy. Recently, we bought a solid platform bed because I though it would prevent me from jumping on it, but I ended up finding a way to do it anyway.

This gets my mother super mad now because she says I promised to stop because of the new solid bed without a springy metal frame. She's threatening to stop giving me money when I'm a poor grad student whose only job is an infrequent part time minimum wage job at a baseball stadium that doesn't schedule me for every home game. (I also got a traffic ticket last week and she's really mad at me for that.)

I try to tell her about stimming and how it's a part of ASDs, but my mom says that "I haven't had a recent diagnosis" and "I need a psychiatrist." How can I tell her that stimming is a part of my disability and it's very hard for me to control?

I need desperate help.

Maybe you can transition to a different form of this stim that won't destroy property. I've had many different stims over the years, and (especially when I've had to hide them) I've modified them in a way that was satisfactory.

Have you tried sitting on one of those big exercise balls? Some people use them as a seat at their desks, but they are also just fun to sit on and bounce. I think they cost less than 20$ at the store, and you can buy different sizes to fit your needs.

Haven't you tried another stim to do you enjoy? I can understand why she wouldn't want you jumping on your bed. But if you are willing to buy your own bed and your own mattress when it breaks, then maybe she wouldn't have a problem with it?

I can def understand why she wouldn't' want you to continue to break things.

Have you considered a trampoline? They make small ones.

Or working on a different release method.

If breaking the habit is too hard, this is an excellent suggestion! The same sitting and bouncing, but on something designed for it... it won't squeak either!
