So, I go in to have a conversation about past due rent and I was told we'd talk over email about the arrangements. Now I get an email that spells out what I never agreed to, using language that indicates I completely agreed to whatever she would come up with! I have tried to get my rental record for the year that has the payment discrepancy in it but they are stalling me.

I have an appointment with a woman who will sign me up with a case manager, so hopefully I can just do all of my "dealings" through the case manager instead. I've been told to apply for disability and my doctor confirms it is likely I will get approved.

I feel like I can't stand this game anymore and I'm just about to start a new one-- disability process. Anyone else tired of getting screwed over in business, personal and other dealings? I must wear a sign on my forehead that screams 'screw me over'.

*SIGH*

Who is "she," your landlord? There are laws regarding housing and landlord/tenant relations and (at least in most states) agencies that can help educate you on your rights and advocate for you, if you think your rights are being violated.

Legal issues surrounding housing can get a little complicated and it never hurts to know your rights. I had an issue recently where I suffered carbon monoxide poisoning in my apartment and wound up having to talk with my local fair housing office on how to handle the situation. (And, I used to even sit on our local Fair Housing Committee, so you'd think I'd have known what to do, but not the case, lol).

It was a horrible situation, but getting some expert advice helped me feel at least a little more empowered. Maybe it might help you, too.

I hope you printed out the email. It can have all the implicit language she cares to puff up, if nothing has your signature agreeing to those terms she can go kick rocks. Seriously, what can she do to you that would make you less than a worthwhile person?

You can hand it off to your case manager, but that can take time and most of them already have a monumental workload so they tend to forget small matters. I bet if you resolved this yourself and stood your ground you'd feel 10 times better about yourself as a person, and sends them the message that you're not a person to be f-ed with.

As 'they' say, pick your battles. If it takes you 5 degrees out of your comfort zone then just relegate it to the caseworker, I'm NOT you of course but if it was me I'd get a mental picture of George McFly knocking out Biff at the high school dance and that would be enough to inspire me

The OP wasn't especially specific or clear about what happened.

It's obvious the landlady can't make up terms after the lease was signed. Even the terms in the lease would be trumped by local landlord tenant law if there's a conflict.

So the issue is?

Wild guess

He's late on the rent, they talk it out, the land lord re-writes what was agreed to and tries to say he agreed to the payment plan he didn't agree to.

Forging his signature is serious business. I doubt his signature was on the email she sent him though.
