Stressed out over new job

I started working at the university I go to food court on Tuesday and so far have had three eight hour shifts - they haven't gone well. On Wednesday i was working at a pita shop and as soon as I began working I had to pack pita's with stuffing and roll them up, but we had a non-stop line from 11 to 3 o'clock and I was struggling big time and there were quite a number of people laughing at me. I worked again on friday at a bigger place and the same type of deal. Though I did learn to not make mistakes as my shift went along I am petrified of working there. There isn't really any training happening and that is because they expect you to know what you are doing. The people I work with aren't overly friendly and neither are the students that come past. I feel like killing myself really.

Believe me, I know what it's like to work at a job that brings you nothing but pain, misery and suffering. I'm a nurse and every day is torture. The patients don't want to be there. The staff doesn't want to be there. The patients don't understand the staff because they're immigrants. No one is happy there. It's just a means to make money to pay the rent. It's a horrible state of affairs, but that's what life is. Torture for money to pay the rent. Horrible.

you'd think people would sympathize rather than laugh when you were having a hard time. don't hurt yourself over some people who don't know how to behave.

try the job a while. it should get easier. if it doesn't, find a different job. no job is worth suicide.

You're in a very demanding position - one that requires speed and personality (not really Aspie strong points...)

Quite frankly, you're in the wrong job. You'd be better off pushing a broom at midnight or something...

Based on my own experiences, I can tell you that I have a hard time serving customers because of my speed, but from a customer's point of view, I can assure you that most customers just want to pay, obtain the correct change; then obtain what they have ordered. Only a minority of customers intend to make your life difficult, most probably because they are already in a bad mood when they encounter you. I'm more worried about co-workers because co-workers have a higher tendency to make your life difficult as compared to customers.

Yeah except it is not enough to do what is easy anymore in the world ... you need to get out there and thrive. I wish these things just came easier to me like it seems to do with everyone else.

My co-workers ARE difficult to work with.

If you're doing it to purposely try and grow from it then I'll congratulate you and urge you on!

I may not be the most people-person out there, but I actually enjoyed retail sales because I just love helping people. My current job of telephone-based tech support is a pretty good one too and I get a lot of compliments from people who appreciate my thorough style. ...but it all boils down to co-workers doesn't it? Despite my large file of customer compliments, I find myself being passed over for promotions that go to the "cool kids"... the smokers' circle of popular people who always look out for each other and kick down anyone not in the clique. *sigh*

Anyway - I'm proud of you for sticking in a position that's difficult. Hang in there! If I had any advice to offer for getting along with YOUR cool-kids, I would....

That's not realistic of them to expect you to know how to do these things. There's always tips and tricks to preparing fast food. I remember my days of doing that and what bothered me was the hurry, hurry, hurry attitude. That, and the long hours and no time to take a rest. It's a difficult job.
