I've lost $600 on publishing and advertising a book. People I'm doing a college course with told me to my face they would buy it. 3 of them. They all lied. I saw them again the next lesson and they were all acting friendly, as if it didn't matter. I haven't ever felt much more depressed.

And I'll bet those 3 people didn't even know you'd spent 600 on publishing and advertising. As a writer, I'm sorry to hear this kind of news.

You seem to be approaching this as an ethical problem in your classmates. It would be more more profitable to frame this as a business lesson.

In business, no sale has been made until there is either a signed contract or a payment, period. People change their minds, especially as to how they spend money; what seemed to be a rational purchase last week, may appear over-extending the cash flow this week. You think they made a commitment, they didn't.

Try not to make this an emotional issue; it's money and that puts it in the realm of business. It's business; people shop; people change their minds; people spend their money where they will.

Surely you are not saying that the sale of 3 books would have covered your $600? Take responsibility for the risk you decided to take with your funds; that will empower you. Blaming your classmates and calling it betrayal, will hold you back.

I agree totally! Next time, have them pre-pay before placing an order so you're not stuck footing the bill.
