It's for the best. No matter how much I try to control my spending, I always spend too much. I owe her like $10k, mainly for dental work, and she really needs to be paid back. She allows me $400 a month for food-which I promptly blow through in two weeks. Also, I'm diabetic yet can't stop buying sugary treats, even though it's really, really bad for me and makes me sick. She finally told me that I need to do something until I can learn how to stay within a budget. So I agreed that she should hold onto my debit card, and let me have it once a week to buy food, and to withdraw my gas money at the beginning of the month, and to pay the copays for my meds. She's also concerned that my diabetes will get worse unless I can stop buying and eating sugar. I have type 2 diabetes and weigh 300 lbs (5'7" white male). I really need to lose weight but can't do it as long as I can't stick to my diet. *sigh*

Wow, that's tough. I think you have a good plan to start with.

Does the area where you live have an online grocery delivery service? You might be able to budget your groceries better if you shopped for them in a less stimulating environment. The people who sell sweets know that people in the grocery store are vulnerable, and they try to manipulate you with advertising. I think even Amazon.com has some groceries you can buy online. Some grocers allow you to call in an order and will deliver it for a fee.

I also have a friend who weighed considerably more than you; she lost weight (interestingly - to the weight you are now!) by starting a fundraising campaign for a cause she believed in - she got people to donate money for each pound she lost, and she went to a doctor to set up a plan for healthy eating. Just having the accountability of the people online waiting to donate helped her give up the foods she used to binge on. This may or may not work for you, but sometimes figuring out how to motivate yourself is the real issue.

I would def agree that your weight needs to be a focus. Do you exercise? If not, you should start.

How about a pre-paid debt card? Your mom loads your 400 allowance and when you run out, you run out until the next month. You can only spend what's on it.

I have an EBT card that loads $200 each month and I don't use it just on myself. $400 is a lot of food money for just 1 person. Are you eating out a lot? Introduce healthier food at home into your routine and increase the frequency. Have someone go with you when shopping, and NEVER go to the grocery store hungry. Besides bringing complications to diabetes the sugary stuff is ruining all that dental work you're paying off.

How about spending debit on grocery gift cards and gas cards and refill it when it runs low? Lock it up in a safety deposit box and "depend" on the "gift" cards instead. That way, your mom has less control and you learn better ways of managing your own money.
