psych. hospital

With my long-term unemployment and no hope in sight along with living in an area where i know no one and can't get away, i have been getting more severely depressed. Just me and my dog.

It is now to the point of feeling suicidal and where i can't talk on the phone. Now my sister without my permission called my psych doctor and told him i was having trouble talking with her. They now was my to go to a psych hospital for unspecified reasons. The thought of being there for an indefinite amount of time really would kill me as i have no one to turn to and what would happen to my dog? Plus i don't have the money to pay for any visit, as i can't get insurance.

Can they keep me there involuntarily?I really don't want to go there. Help

I spent two months in a psych hospital. I wasn't there voluntarily because I was half dead to begin with. This was years ago. I'm guessing now there are all sorts of vocational services and whatnot in those places. It wouldn't kill you to check yourself in if you're suicidal. Hopefully, you may even get a job out of the deal.

Your sister might have to take care of your pooch. If not it'll probably be best to leave it in a shelter just for the time you're interred.

I think (correct me if I'm wrong, please!) that in most places in North America, you can be involuntarily committed to a psych. hospital for 3 days for evaluation IF someone has good enough reason to believe that you present a serious and immediate danger to yourself or others. Beyond that I'm not sure what happens...I think that if, during those three days, the doctors determine that you're not a risk to yourself or others, you're free to go -- otherwise you stay longer.

As long as nobody has decided that you are a risk to yourself or others, then they cannot force you into a psychiatric hospital against your will -- unless you have a court-appointed guardian that makes decisions about your medical treatment.

They let you have a computer? They HAVE a computer? Man, your guys are much nicer than the psych ward at my local. I had to walk the ward in circles for two weeks.

Sorry, i had a typo that gave the opposite meaning to my message. I am not in the hospital, and i did check the hospital website and it said computers and cell phones were not allowed.

Ive been there done that, trust me it's not as bad as you may think.

The main concern when you first go in is what are they going to do and am I going to be there forever? The answers are only what they need to do and no not forever.

No doubt they will trail you on a antidepressant drug, they take about 2 weeks to work so that will give you a rough time frame, providing you don't act on your suicidality and try to make an effort such as getting out of bed and looking after yourself you will be fine.

All in all what do you have to lose? Not much given what you have already said, as for the dog don't worry about it, they also have to ensure the safety of your pets or they can be sued, what I will assure you of is this.

If you stay at home, nothing changes, if you go out, there is always opportunity for change.

I have been in mental hospital twice. One in a Veterans hospital, the other in a civilian hospital. To be perfectly honest, after the first few days, other than the medication, I kinda enjoyed the seclusion/isolation and routine. I wouldnt mind staying there all the time if it werent for fear of being drugged and being abused by someone. I know, I watch too much tv.

When I was in the psych ward they had computers, just a couple and it was limited time...you couldn't get on facebook or youtube or probably a lot of sites, but I got on here just fine though and was able to check email.

We had to earn privileges just to go outside--thank goodness I wasn't smoking at the time. I don't think I ever graduated to any level. They just gave up.

When I was in psychiatric hospital I was allowed my mobile phone and my laptop (at my own risk). It was a teaching hospital so had the university wireless network installed - I work at the university so was able to have full internet access while there, though mostly I used my laptop for playing Angry Birds Space and watching movies and stayed off the internet. Folk who don't work at the uni or are not students wouldn't be able to get internet access on their laptops in the hospital (unless they are able to access the NHS network by being an employee).

When I was in there were no computers there except a couple of Apple2es in the school part and no cell phones. We had a couple of pay phones to use to make calls. We also had an Atari to play. This was in 1989-1990.
