It's so annoying. I'm 17 and I'm planning to go away to college and she friggin tells me "Did you shower?"; "Don't stay up too late now."; "It's time to go!" (she calls me like 3 times before we leave every morning for school); "Did you brush your teeth?". Ugh! So annoying! I want her to just leave me alone, I'm almost a man already!! :x

It's also really hypocritical that she complains that I don't 'have enough skills to live on my own' when she keeps bothering and 'reminding' about things I have under control. Man!!

My parents nag me like that, too, and I am 27.

I'm 46, my mom lives 2 doors down (long story), and she still nags me. It just gets a little subtler. You won't ever escape it. ;)

Depends on what you mean by "love". I find that to be such an ill-defined word that I try to avoid using it. My mom uses it like it's supposed to excuse anything, which makes me cringe whenever I hear her say "I love you". I suppose she means "I value your continued existence", but I don't consider that as an excuse (for either the person loving or the person loved).

What you're really bitching about is nagging, and it's not just moms that do that. But I suspect that there's some biological imperative that causes moms to be best (or most egregious) at it.

It's crap when somebody says, "If you loved me you would..." Just because that's how you express love doesn't mean that's how others express it, or that they don't love you.

My grandparents did that to me when I lived with them for my senior year of high school. I was 18, turning 18 sucked ass, all the girls I was attracted to who were attracted back were too young to do anything with legally.

Yeah, I know what you guys are saying is true, but it's just something that is really annoying.

I really think it's bad that some of you older people still get nagged and stuff. It just goes to show that people think we need someone to look after or baby us just cos we have a diagnosis..

It's not because we have a diagnosis. I don't. (And attempts to suggest I'm a possible are met with stern resistance to the idea.) NT's get the same nagging.

He looked at me quite calmly and said, “My friend, all mothers are Jewish.”

I'm in "the same shoes" as you are and I'm 23 -- I plan of moving out of my parent's house sometime this year (for more details, see my "W.P. blog")...

I think you'll feel less pressure from your parents once you move out! As for skills, maybe you could offer to do some chores on your own without your parents help to prove that you can & are able to live independently:
  • Do your family's grocery shopping on your own
  • Wash/Dry/Fold/Put Away your own clothes
  • Start to schedule some of your own appointments (Doctor, Dentist, Etc...)
  • Keep your room clean without being asked

I wish you the best of luck with your transition in life -- and don't expect your parents to go away 100%...you'll still need to rely on them once-and-while for help!! :D

Excellent advice. If you can handle more responsibility, let it show.
