I hear that one of the common feelings in suicidal people, and one of the common reasons cited for wanting to kill oneself, is the feeling of guilt, of being a burden on others. Is this common? Is it more dangerous to be suicidal with this feeling or without it?

I'm generally suicidal but it has nothing to do with guilt. I haven't done anything to be guilty of. I didn't cheat on anyone. I didn't rob or beat anyone up. My rent is being paid by me and me alone. I'm living pretty much on the straight and narrow. My issues are my loneliness, the circles I go around in frequently and the fact that I sometimes think I will accomplish nothing so why bother prolonging my exasperation? It's torturous to me.

I'm the same way. I don't feel burdensome or worthless, and I know I have some good qualities (intelligence, sense of humour, a nice meaty cock). It's just that I'm extremely lonely and isolated, for reasons I can't ever see improving, and I don't see much (any?) point in continuing on except that my family would be devastated and I don't want to do that to them. I've been seeking help for these thoughts but it doesn't change the fact that ultimately (a) I do want to kill myself and (b) regardless of when, and barring accidents and diseases, it is certainly how I will die.

I don't feel guilty though. I mean, because of substance abuse I've used people and stolen drugs/money from others, but I'm fundamentally an open and honest person. That is, except to my family and friend. With people who are close to me like that, there's an emotional component to such information. The inherent emotional aspect of such information gets in the way, makes the sharing of facts uncomfortable and complex in a way that it isn't with strangers, acquaintances, teachers, counsellors, etc.

I thought you were going to talk about how you thought drove someone to commit suicide.

I think she meant she misread the title (I'm guessing that because I did the same thing).

Hope you guys feel better - life can really suck sometimes. And where are the answers? Who knows?

That's what I figured (re: misreading the title).

Answers? I suppose if one were to get lucky and find the things that kept one's depression and suicidality at bay enough to function and be happy sometimes, that would count as a sufficient answer for me. But as it stands, the hopelessness is rational. There are factors keeping me alive which, were they not there, would leave no impediments to my suicide. Those factors, though, are my family, and they're not something I can just ignore. At this stage, having only begun to seek professional medical help, I cannot burden them with a son who has killed himself. As for a son who has "attempted" suicide (I say this because the intention would be to live and to receive help), I can't say that I won't put that burden on them.

I've promised my counsellor that I won't hurt myself between now and our next session (a week from tomorrow). I'm not one to break a promise. And certainly not to a person like her, with whom I've been completely and utterly honest. Breaking a promise to her, especially this one, would destroy the trust between us. I can only be helped if I tell the truth. But I can't honestly say that I wouldn't slit my wrists if I hadn't made that promise. I would love to do it, to go to the hardware store and find the razor blades and slit them right there. Somebody would find me in time. I would get the help I need and could simply abdicate all responsibility, release all the pressure, focus on getting better.

I was going to edit that to make it so I actually said something, but I didn't get the chance to. Anyway, this is probably the wrong way to about doing this, but suicide is the worst way out of guilt as it creates problems for other people. You might think it fixes things, but it doesn't.
