My little cuddle buddy, Little Bit, has been missing for a week. People up the road claim to have seen him even just last night, but I haven't. I think there must be a female in heat up there, lots of cats prowling around right now. But then why wouldn't he come home when he's done? Or come to me when I walk around the block calling him. I'm getting worried.

I'd been planning to get him neutered, but hadn't found a place I could afford until a couple of weeks ago. If I get my hands on him I am locking him in the house no matter how badly he wants to play outside. At least till I get him fixed. Does anyone know how much it costs to get a cat micro chipped?

What do I do if I don't find him? He's my little cuddle buddy. I don't really have human friends, I don't go out. I just stay in with the cat snuggled against me. The fact that he hasn't even been coming home to snuggle is worrying me.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Pets are our family, it hurts deeply when they are gone.

I don't know how much the actual cost of chipping is, but I do know there is an annual fee to keep the data on record.

My guess would be that there are pheromones still in the air and he's hoping for additional chances to mate.

Do you have one or several good pictures of him that you could put up flyers?

I have one OK recent photograph (he's just under a year so most are baby pics) on facebook. But the library is closed on Mondays due to budget cuts. Hopefully he'll come home tonight, cats are usually only in heat for a week or so.

Alright, so it sounds like the flyer is more of a reserve plan. And the recent photo which is merely OK is probably fine as long as it shows his colors. And really just a half dozen strategically placed flyers might do the trick. And if you have to use one of the older photos, maybe just clearly state The cat is now 11 months old.

And it sounds like the people up the road are a resource as long as you don't ask them too often.

Well most of them are at my work. They know him because he has been known to meet me at work when my shift ends and walk home with me.

He'll come home when the vixen cat decides she's had enough. Don't worry.

Put up flyers all over the neighborhood -- this worked for me when my cat went missing for two weeks. Calls came in a few times and came to nothing, but finally someone called, said my cat was in their backyard "right now", and I went and got him back!

My vet had already been strongly suggesting I make him an indoor cat, because he'd been beaten up regularly by other cats and was having a horrible time of it outside. He was already neutered but probably got lost from running away from another fight with the local gangster cats.

So after I got him back from going missing, I made him exclusively indoors and he took to it without a struggle, and lived out a long and happy, comfortable, threat-free life.

I seem to remember some kind of charity animal clinic in my former city, who offered reduced-fee neutering to those less able to afford it. You might want to look online for similar facilities in your area, or vets who can work out a payment plan or similar. There must be some alternative to paying full price. Similar with micro-chipping -- there can be a payment plan worked out.
