I work in an educational institution. My work station is located in close proximity to 5 intercom/ buzzer systems. They were all turned up to ridiculously high levels, but I have managed to turn down the volume on the one closest to my desk. (The volume knob has since broken, so I can't turn it back up. ) One I have measured at 94 db when bells go off, and when they are all going off i'ts still 75db at my desk. Someone complained they couldn't hear the intercom, so some bright spark has turned 2 of them up! They are located close to very high ceilings, so I cant turn down the volume.

My stress levels are going through the roof.

I want to say something, but I'm afraid theyll realise the one near my desk is not operating.
At this point I'm heading for a meltdown and I just want to put a gun to my head.

Is there any way you could change the location of your desk and would this help? Or is the whole place noisy? I would suggest earplugs, but I imagine you have to hear the intercom transmissions. Very annoying.
I once was in a situation where I was facing another employee across my desk. I absolutely hated this. Once I moved my CPU over to block the visual line between us. She moved it back the same day. Urgg.

I can't move my desk, and it wouldn't help. It's generally noisy. I've complained to many people, but not in writing. A few other people have commented how loud it is , but it isn't adressed. It isn't as loud in the "executive" area, so I guess they figure if it doesn't worry them it isn't a problem. This seems to be a recurring theme in my life.

Ihave worn ear plugs before, but have to take them out when people, want to talk to me, and they hurt my ears after a while. I guess if I wear them 24/7 they might get the picture, though in this place I seriously doubt it. I'm really stressed out.

Can you wear over-ear ear defenders or noise cancelling headphones? They're easier to take off in a hurry and more comfortable than earplugs.
