Me and spouse took the same decision and we both carry cards donating our bodies to the local medical university for the students to dissect and do whatever they want with to help with their studies. Seems more practical and useful and it is also free. No funeral expenses for anyone or having to go through all that organisation just to line the pockets of the undertakers.

I am an organ donor, but if I die and my organs are not viable, I am registered with my old medical school.

Science *fiction* is a *made up* story about what the future *might* be like, usually about things like space travel or robots. Sheesh!

Anyway I know how you feel, I can't understand why they charge so much to put someone's body in the ground. It's supposed to show respect for the deceased, but why would they care since they're DEAD? It would be better to either become a cadaver or bury me without any environment-killing chemicals, just allow my body to naturally decay and become a part of the earth the way it was meant to be, perhaps surrounded by a forest. The way things are however, I will probably die with no friends or family, tossed into an unmarked grave, and it will be like I never existed. :(

I've already made plans with a few "Good" friends of mine. It's illegal, but I'm having a Norse ship funeral. It's cheap, quick, and everyone can get on with their lives. I'll be happy. I'm dealing with a roommate dying from Stage 4 lung cancer that has moved into her brain. $2,500 she's paid into being cremated. All I need is a wooden boat that can stay afloat for 20 minutes, and about 5-10 gallons of gasoline.

I am signed up to be an organ donor. I have had people offer me funeral insurance. Which I refused as I am 29. Who plans a funeral at 29.

I'm guessing your children will still want/need/feel compelled to hold some sort of memorial service, regardless of your plans for your corpse.

Oh, I don't mean it literally. And science fiction was a pun because who the hell would want my body? It was about how hard this was. I had to go up there today, take her clothes, SEE HER, get her baby toe and hair and nail clippings, which I had to do. not so easy, you know. I still have to make the poppet, then deal with everything. The fact that they knew I used to be in the business took the gloves off with them so to speak. Rather than seeing my mother, laid out, already embalmned and with modesty sheets I was told, she's in the prep room in 3. Hello, this is not a body for me to just dress. This is my mother. At least they warned me of her arms first.

The whole point of a funeral is closure for the loved ones. As for plans I have made it known I am to be parted out like an old ford and then cremated and scattered on a garden somewhere.

I don't know whats happened to me, but something has. I've seriously manned up. I've also been able to deeper feel and know that this was my mother. And I DID EVERYTHING SHE WANTED. I haven't cried. Some, yes I have, but not a lot. And crying in front of anyone else, f**k tht! I'm going to do what I have to do without crying and without being a p****. There is a lot I have to do. And yes, it's not pleasant. And I will make the children do these things too, because they have to learn what to do when somebody goes.

You cannot leave this s**t all sterile to an undertaker. Your hands have to get dirty too.
