Warning about the wrongplanet chat room on IRC

I just want to let others here not to go into the WP chatroom unless you want to get trolled. I am not going there again. That room is full of trolls. I thought that I might be able to find friends or fellow aspies and help or share a few laughs. I was wrong. This year, I will try not to show up in there. Just a warning to others. I speak of the #wrongplanet chat room on IRC.

Thanks for the heads-up. I was actually just about to try it out for the first time.

P.S., maybe someone should tell the mods? Just my opinion, but that's what I did back on DeviantART. Of course, they still wrote about me on Encyclopedia Dramatica, but at least the mod kicked them out.

I only visited the chat room once, a few years ago and there was just a handful of kids making inane chatter. Not been back since. I'd like to point out that the mods on WP are not the same mods in the chat room, so no point reporting any problems there to us.

I used to mod this chat room on Lionel trains (go figure) on a website that is now gone, liveharmony.org, and it was a constant battle with trolls.

I was looking into trying to get a php chatroom going on my website, but instead I turned to playing MMPORGs. Looked too much like real work.

There was some feature of that live harmony that people could just bounce from room to room, so trolling was natural. The idea behind the php chat was that if you had to get to it from the train-related forum, maybe not so many trolls would show up.

I visit the WP irc chat sometimes. It can be nonstop trolling sometimes, but other times there are supportive, informative and funny people there. If you have a thin skin then perhaps you shouldn't visit it. Don't take things personally and use the /ignore command as needed. That does help, although then it can be curious to see other people responding to the troll without being able to read what they are responding to. Usually when that does happen though the context of their replies is sufficient to show that I was correct to implement the /ignore command.

When it is nonstop trolling, I just leave and come back later. Sometimes there are different groups of people there at different times of the day or night, with some time frames having fewer trolls or more support than others. Whatever its faults, I still appreciate that I have a better chance of interacting in real time there with people who can better relate to how I experience life than in most other chat rooms on the internet.

It's an okay place some of the time, just don't take it too serious. I mostly visit when I feel like joking around and having some lighthearted chatter, but I do not troll, and when the chat is lame I leave.

Last time I was on I chatted with Bicycling Guitarist and some other people for a little bit, and BG is no troll.

I'm sorry this happened! I've been informed that, very recently, there was an initiative made in another community to come into #wrongplanet and troll the channel. I come in every now and then, and as TheBicyclingGuitarist said, different people come in at different times of the day. It's best to check back later.

As TallyMan said, the channel is maintained separately from the fora. The rules of the channel strictly prohibit trolling. Again, I'm sorry this happened!! I hope you feel safe to return sometime for support or friendly chat.

I haven't used the WP IRC chatroom yet. Thanks for the heads up. I usually use chatango to make friends online anyway. There are a lot of perverts & people only looking for a roleplay, but I've made a few very close friends there.

Aww...thank you for your kind words, sketches. Perhaps when the trolls are gone I might return, but as of now, I need a break. I also hope that you have a great year also.

I went into the chat room twice and the second time, I caught a bunch of kids in the act of saying nasty things about me. That was seven years ago. I haven't been there since than.

I've been on there once before, few months ago.

It was a nice laugh really! I got a few people to join my cult of worship dedicated to me! That was nice for a while...

Hi, DHP, long time no see.
You have a valid point, however , it's gonna be ups and downs, no mattter what chatroom someone, or someone else is in.
While trolling is shunned upon, especially bullying and cliques against one person, Bicycle guitarist has a point, just grow a thick skin, ignore the bad weeds, sorta out the good plants, that's a metaphor. I hope this viewpoint helps in some way, or other.
