Venting can help relieve stress, as long as it doesn't involve taking things out on others. I live alone, so when stuff goes wrong I am able to verbally vent my stress at home. This actually helps me hold in my stress better when I am away from home, as I know that I will eventually be able to go home and let myself go, and all without hurting other people's feelings. When I lived with family members I was much more prone to melt-downs. The relatives were the most common cause of my melt-downs. Now that I live alone the melt-downs seldom happen, and I am much better at dealing with emotional stress.
I don't know what works best for you, but find it, and try to stick with it.
